Replacing Knobs with sliders ?.

So Im sitting at the work bench with a few pre-amps and tone control boards.
Some have come with Knobs some have come without knobs.

Im trying to draw up what my control panel will look like. Mains power s/w. AMP selector switch, Speaker selection switch.
Im going for a steam punk look. And had this idea. Can I replace the knobs with Sliders.
So slider for volume. Smaller sliders for Low / Mid /High balance control.

I did some reading And searching. But all the sliders I found have 3 pins only.
Like for the pots you get a double gang i.e.6 pin. Do you get double gang sliders. ?
My pots are all 100K. So replacing them with 100K sliders work ?.
I could always have two sliders for each control but Na that would take up too much space.
Any help with the right part name or what its called would be helpful.
Just want a confirmation that the idea will work before I blow money buying these sliders.

I found this.

Hi anyone with some experience probably will say the same... sliders are way inferior to rotary stuff. Consumer grade I mean. Bourns may be very good but still: these devices were made to crackle as they are an easy prey to dust and dirt.

It used to be so bad that many feel sliders to be a decisive factor NOT to buy the device.

I remember a small PA mixer that came in for service. EVERY control on it was a slider. Little short ones for pan and EQ, longer ones for level and gain. And a nightmare. Sliders are far more susceptible to dust and dirt, and will be far less reliable. And in the future, much harder to fudge replacements than rotary.

Seriously, use regular rotary pots, just find fun knobs. A friend brought us his bass guitar for something, and he had no knobs. SO when we gave it back, we had stuck on some knobs from a stove. He kept them. SO he could dial the volume from HIGH down to SIMMER.

Of course it will work. Circuit does not care if the pot is round or straight. As long as value is the same. Just make sure you select right type when it comes to linear or log.
You can find stereo or mono, just like equalizers were, either separated for each channel, or one slider for both channels.

AliExpress do 100K twin track faders in several lengths and the knobs but as others have said they are susceptible to dirt ingress and become noisy. I've always found that adjusting volume with a slider has the wrong feel unless it is under your fingers like a mixing desk.

Sliders take up a lot of space, require some careful metalwork, and are prone to failure and contamination. But maybe that's what you want to make, and practical issues don't matter. Personally, I'd go with electronic / digital controls and avoid any kind of pot. Touch screens are an appealing idea, to replace all the pots and switches.

I couldn't agree with you more jean-paul!
While rotary pots can time, become noisy, sliders let more dust inside.
Any product that uses them I have to avoid.

However, my 1989 Technics receiver uses sliders in it's 7 band equalizer, and they've been trouble-free for years.
I'm lucky I guess.

Old-old joke: Why does Ford put a $2 jack in a $2700 car?
A: Because they ran out of $1 jacks.

50 cent sliders.

The 33 cent sliders are further down the page, friend.

As a "steam punk look art statement", consumer-grade sliders are a tolerable choice. Old hands may hate them but art may not grow old.

Mouser has long had a fine selection of slide pots. Today they range from $0.63 to $704.

$15-$47 gets a motorized slide pot which, in steam-punk, begs for a fake steam cylinder to move it.

See my post #5.
Actually I wanted to limit the link, and I looked for the '?' but in my post the link looks different ....

I don't know why it sometimes snips with "..." and sometimes it does not. Or why THIS time it snipped just before the "?"

An eBay link has the site, "/itm/", and item number. All the rest is tracking.

Snip after the item number.

When we all follow "your" tracking link, eBay thinks Jan must be a really-really-really-good customer spending lots of time on the site.

If you must post a real long URL (some sites won't shorten well) the link tool
linkicon.gif
lets you wrap text in a long hidden URL.
