Replacing a Sony Amp TA-AX4 & a Sony FM Tuner STJX4L

I have these two working Sony units (1982?) and was thinking of replacing them.

Might it be a good time to replace them with something similar or just keep using them for another 20 years?

Can anyone recommend a reliable brand but not in the high price bracket? (< £300 )

I remember the Sony term 'Legato Linear' from back in the day when I associated it with 'Quality'.

Bass & treble controls, loudness control, MM & MC cartridge facility etc. - all features I value but which are not commonly found in today's amps.

And modern stereo tuners operate on different, but not necessarily better sounding, principles.

If the pair are working well, then keep them as your contribution to saving the planet. Besides, they look cool! 😎

Mechanical quality yes, sound quality not so much. The latter seems to have more importance to music lovers.

It is not a shame either to replace 40 year old low end consumer goods. If you keep them then consider an overhaul and recapping.

You’d be surprised what 100 Euro buys you today and what sound quality you get. I can send you a class D module for shipping costs if you like to see for yourself.

Ah I only mean a single set of inputs stereo amplifier as I use myself with digital sources. I don't need phono inputs since 1984 and bass & treble controls, source selection switches and loudness control mean possible defects/crackling potentiometers after time. My experiences with for instance Aiyima A8 are positive, sounds better than quite a few higher priced AB devices of the eighties/nineties. Since the recent class D developments and Chi-Fi amplifiers have become better at low prices the issue "features versus performance" is back again. I bought an A8 recently even for 60 Euro and modded it. Yes that is a fraction of the price of a second hand "vintage" seventies/eighties/nineties AB amplifier that often needs an overhaul. An overhaul that itself might cost more than a brand new but minimalistic Chi-Fi device. It takes a few days to get used to power on/off and volume and no features but it is the results that count.

If high performance is the goal the surprise should be that some of us use 1982 stuff for 40 years 😀

Just hints for nice new good sounding devices as usual among audio enthusiasts. No more no less. Of course we should be cautious with earth resources.

The integrated stereo valve amp that I purchased new over 50 years ago is still in regular use in my Man Cave.

The renovation work I performed on it a few years ago made it sound even better than it did when new.

It recently lost one channel at the preamp stage, but the simple replacement of an open circuit anode resistor meant that normal service was quickly resumed.

I obtain more satisfaction from keeping this veteran going than I ever would from wiring up a Class D amp board.

Horses for courses! 🙂

I fully accept that the latest class D amplifiers sound excellent. However, class D is simply not my area of interest.

I do have a tiny, inexpensive class D stereo amp which does supply an amazing bang for the buck. In spite of that, it languishes in its box! 😉

9 Euros will buy you a 4440 amp with FM module, which even works on 12V battery. Indian prices!
100 Euros will but a 100W / ch/ Mosfet amp here...

But I feel the old set should be inspected and retained after service.
Those are really good sets, no need to change just to be fashionable and up to date.
