When can I source in North America, an
affordable 115V / 300VA Toroid with 2 x 35VAC
what will fit in the original Quad 405 chassis?
I've got a unit here with a very noisy main.

Can't help you with local suppliers I'm afraid but have you considered it could (might) be a mains purity issue.
Mains DC and Transformers
not sure if you know but the Quad uses a C-core transformer. I would look for a used 405 for the parts. Best regards Moray James.
There was a batch of noisy mains transformers that Quad had problems with during the 70's. It could be you have one of them...
When the unit is cold, it is quiet. After about 15 minutes, the transformer
will start to hum/buzz. It isn't from the AC as I have had it hooked up
to AC/DC - DC/AC isolation unit APC R1500 which give is a clean 60Hz.
This particular Q 405 looks to be of an early vintage.
On the net, there are some toroids from Multicomp, but they only
have 230 V primary side. No good for North America.

Is it worth a dip in varnish for the old tranny. Heat the tranny up first (quite hot say around 60c) and then immerse in varnish for an hour or two, remove and leave to drip dry for 24 hours. Then place in a warm location.
