I need replacement drivers for the Gradient SW-63 dipole subwoofers for QUAD ESL-63 electrostatics. Gradient used a pair of Peerless 831812 drivers per enclosure. The possible replacements - 831857 and 830500 - are no longer available either, they are discontinued.
I am looking for affordable 12" drivers for dipole subwoofers.
Cheers,

Cheers,
these are very similar to those Peerless models,
the P830845 is the closest and would most likely work well,
i would say it will work better than any other brand driver,

If you're looking for an old fashioned driver with an old fashioned price, then here's a candidate (Peerless 830669, <$100):
Peerless SLS 830669 - 12" Woofer - Coated Paper Cone
or
Peerless by Tymphany 830669 12" Paper Cone SLS Subwoofer
(4 for $90 each)
Peerless SLS 830669 - 12" Woofer - Coated Paper Cone
or
Peerless by Tymphany 830669 12" Paper Cone SLS Subwoofer
(4 for $90 each)
Peerless 830669 [$90] vs Peerless 830845 [$190]. Both drivers use paper cone, is the later worth $100 more?
the Gradient used a driver much closer to the '845, there will be a significant difference with the cheaper driver,
the '845 has a lot more excursion capability, and less distortion,
if it were my money i would go with the '845 for the gradient,

The price I quoted is from Digikey Australia, it will cost around $200 to ship and if something goes wrong... I will keep looking for a suitable replacement.
By the way I am building a Gradient SW 63 look alike per Mats Tornqvist plans.

From Gradient:
Generally woofer and especially subwoofer drivers are designed for closed or bass reflex cabinets. Requirements for open baffle are different. Moving mass is one example. In boxed design a given amount (usually very high in subwoofers) of moving mass is needed in order to get low cutoff frequency. I open baffle design very low moving mass is of benefit, too high mass produces only harmful vibrations in baffle structure.
Parameters of 830845 look feasible for SW-63. Moving mass is on high side and the radiating area of 830845 is slightly smaller than that of 830669. The displacement volume is not so much bigger than greater max. excursion indicates.
On paper the 830845 should work fine in SW-63. We have never tried it, so you will do it at your own risk. Of 830669 we have good experience.

Finally, I was able to find four 830845 drivers at Digikey in Minnesota.
Now, the hardest problem will be to find a used MT Audio Design XO-2001 crossover.
I have one XO-2001 sitting not used since I moved over to different system after I sold my Quad ELS 63.
Cheers Tonny
Tony I tried to send you a PM but for some reason it doesn't work. Can you contact me please via PM?
