repairing Yamaha NS-690 II speakers

I have access to a pair of Yamaha NS-690 II speakers locally that are being sold off with a fault in one of the mids. The guy who owns them isn't quite sure what the problem is with it, and told me he'd pulled themid out and could see nothing wrong - it just won't work.

For $100 I thought they m,ight be a good buy if I can fix the midrange easily enough, as they speakers had an excellent reputation in their day for build and sound quality. However, if the mid needs replacing it could be a problem, as I can't find anyone who has them for sale (except for some guy on Ebay in Britain who wants a fortune to ship them to the USA).

If the midrange is faulty, could someone tell me where I could get a replacement, and roughly how much it might cost? Failing that, is there another manufactuer's speaker fairly identical in specification that I could use instead?

The other point I wondered about is whether there's a problem with the crossover in the speaker, and whether it could be an easy fix.

Any thoughts on the matter would be much appreciated.

?????????????????????????

Hi Tom

The heading is of course a jokey reference to the sites you suggested - nice pictures though!

Where on earth did you find them? Must have been some of the gobbyldook sites I skipped over while doing a seach myself.

Now if only I can find a place that sells the troublesome mid.

Thanks anyway.......Tim

Hey TimboW,

OK dumb question here - did you check with Yamaha? As of a few years ago they still had the beryllium mids and tweeters in stock for the NS-1000s - for about $200 + a pop as I recall. I have no idea if that means they have other replacement drivers for their vintage speakers, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

The other place to check is eBay - I've seen drivers for the vintage NS series offered there numerous times. You'd judt have to be patient I guess.

Incidentally I've owned a pair of NS-670s since the late 70s - they've been my main speakers all that time. I know they won't last forever but I've never felt any need to replace them, and I'm sure you're on the same page with me there.

Glad to run into another "NS-er"!

yamaha?

Actually, no, I hadn't thought of trying the company as I thought the speaker was so long out of production that they'd have run out of replacement parts for them long ago. I'll give them a whirl.

Yes, I have been looking on Ebay. As I mentioned, the only person currently selling the item I need is in Britain, and he wants almost as much as the item is worth just for the shipping charge.

Thanks

yahoo japan has things like this often

okay, i think i found some!

would this be along the lines of what you meant?

http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r30030773

They're advertised as belongint to the 690, but the model numbers are different to the ones you pictutered.

By the way, I did a conversion, and the buy it now price is $63, which isn't bad I guess. Only problem is I can't communicate with the guy unless he reads English, so that I can find out what thew shipping might be.

hi again,
I found a chart on one of the Japanese yahoo pages that listed all the units used in each of the three marks of the 690. Seems that the JA-0701 is the correct mid, but it applies to the first series. The one I'm looking to replace is from the Mark II, and the mid for that is the JA-0701B. I'm guessing that I have to get exactly the correct one, right, as the specs may not be the same as the previous model?

Thanks

As of about a year ago I purchased 3 ea. beryllium NS-1000 tweeters from Yamaha USA. I was quoted over the phone at $148 ea. But when I gave them my creditcard # the price came down to $110 ea. My understanding is that both tweeters and Midranges are still available ( new).🙂

pixs look familiar NS-1000M's NS-1000's and NS-690's. The 690s have a totally different set of drivers than the 1000's. Tweeters are the same physical size but the 1000 mids are quite a bit larger than the 690's

Wow - I'm surprised they're not asking for more than that. I remember a quote of about $240 ea for the mids, so I assumed the tweets would be closer to $200 or so. I may look at getting some of those myself. Sure would like to have somebody like Zaph measure them.
