I had 2 dvd players that are unable to load the disc lying around. They are cheap and are by no commerical value to repair them but I still would like to give a try, just for some learning and training.
These player are not able to recognize the disc loaded into them : 'no disc' error, and I have heard someone said that the 'lens' are deteriorating. Any suggestion that I might give it a 2nd chance?

Don't take this the wrong way, but have you tried cleaning the lenses in question? bit of alcohol on a cotton bud. 'Ya never know unless you try...

A lot of drives suffer this problem which is mainly due to allignment problem. The lens lack allignment somehow. Since they are alligned precisely by machines in nano scale, it is quite hard or almost impossible to allign them back to pefection. Yet in case of dust, you can try cleaning them with a soft cotton with some cleaing sol. Make sure the allignment is not changed during this process.I have a dozen of drives in my show case, all of which has the allignment problem.
I was just starting to worried about this alignment thing that rejithcv brought up. I can still remember the old days when I tried to change the read/write head of a cassette deck. I know that I had to do some alignment with the lens but never thought that it could be that serious. Then this would mean a 'NO' in trying to repair the drive, wouldn't it.?
If it's a Sony DVD you can align the laser in the service menu by using the auto alignment. Manual alignment is also available but best left alone.
In standby press remote buttons in this order: Title, Clear, Power and you're in. A lot of times you have to do the auto alignment a few times as it bombs and must get closer after each try.
If the laser is dead or way out, nothing is going to help.
