REL Stampede problems

Hi folks,

My REL Stampede seems to have an issue. When I turn it on, it will work fine for about a minute, then it might drop in volume, or go entirely silent, or maybe get way too loud and noisy. If I turn it off and back on again, it will be fine again for a minute or so, and then start misbehaving again.

I opened it up and didn't see any obvious problems. Solder all looked good. Caps read well. I did replace the 220uF/10V cap while I was in there because its ESR was a little high, but it was probably fine anyway. The new cap made no difference at all.

I've verified the connections in the wires that run from the amp to the high level Neutrik plug.

Any ideas what might be going on here?

Thanks,
Paul

Current Status

I put it on my bench and hooked it up the signal generator. What I'm seeing is that, initially it's fine, but if I leave it sitting for a while, then when I apply signal, I get nothing... unless I lower the frequency...

Basically, what it seems like, is that, at some point, while it's sitting, the cutoff drops from the 60Hz I had set, down to about 20Hz. A 35Hz test tone results in no output, but lowering it to 20 or so results in lots of output, which hits the limits of excursion of the driver.

Turning the sub off and back on again returns it to normal operation.

This is a "smart" sub. It has a microcontroller managing things like cutoff, gain, phase, etc. I'm concerned that this failure mode is something where the microcontroller is getting into a bad state spontaneously, and changing to a set of configuration parameters that don't make sense.

Anyone else dealt with this?
