Rega RP1 dismantle for art project - help!?

First post but hoping some of you may be able to help!

So a buddy of mine has an old Rega RP1 he's willing to let me have (for a nominal fee) and I'm looking to apply some custom designs to the plinth before rebuilding the turntable to meet my brief.

Question is - is this possible? How tedious would the process be? (in taking apart and putting back together again etc and would this require professional tools?) How hard would it be to purchase a piece of MDF (believe that's the material but sure I'm wrong!) and build my own plinth into the turntable? (So I could have multiple designs)

I've had a look through some similar-ish topics which helped a little, however any help would be most appreciated! I'm thinking the finished article, with a record relevant to the respective design theme, playing at my final show would be pretty sweet!

you can disassemble Rp1 in 10 min no problems . Plinth is a particle board and likely better sounding than mdf . The quality of the table (as nice as it sounds for the price) is so cheesy that I'd use it as is and upgrade as funds allow, there is too many bottlenecks in the design (drive system , platter, arm ) to be worth bother . If you really want to mess with it look like Rp8 is made , a sandwich of foam and vinyl wrap . You could make something similar i.e torsion box with mdf inserts to mount the main bearings , motor and arm.

I agree that I wouldn't replace it's plinth with MDF.

Another option would be to build onto the original platter. I laminated 3" of phenolic coated baltic birch to the bottom of an old P2, veneered it, then upgraded the arm, motor, platter, etc... The sound changed drastically, from a lively table that seemed to lack micro details, to a much more neutral table that doesn't seem to be missing anything.
