No, the uC detect if there is no potmeter connected and set gain to 0db. With potmeter (or by software) the gain can be set from -90 to +15 db.
l have no connection to the volume pin but playing loud.

Probably its %100 sound level at 0db, at lowest value of pot u lost 90db and at maximum level of pot u gain 15db over nominal/full volume.
@Soren which trade mark / model pot you use?
I think he means noise when the pot is rotated... With the 1dB step size you need a smooth analogue change in voltage from the pot. Conductive plastic is less "granular".Yes. You understand that noise will effect conversion from analog to digital, right? Noise = glitches in response.

Yes but only when you turn the pot 😉

I used a P231-QC20BR10K - BI TECHNOLOGIES / TT ELECTRONICS - PANEL POT, 10K LIN 24MM | Farnell element14
Nice big Conductive Plastic at £1.46.... Mouser and Digikey have something similiar.

Hope these mock ups make sense 😉
All the yellow marks signify GND (sorry, couldn't paint any white stripes)
Thanks!

Seems like that should be closer to -90db.
If you are using without a pot, using the serial port for volume control, you would want it to come on at a low volume.
My current DAC has volume control, and it can remember what volume to start at. I have direct connection from DAC to amp, so I it set to start at min volume, and adjust up from there to listen.

You can set the startup volume level in the "uManager" via the serial port. If you have a potmeter then it will of course remember its last physical position....

Playing via opto Toslink and SB Touch.

How do you wire the optical cable? Cut off one head andbmake a jumper to spdif2? I am not using the SB, butbthe Airport Express, so would be great if you could post a photo how you wire it. 🙂
Some pot options from Digikey depending how much you want to spend...
987-1326-ND
95A1A-B28-B15L-ND
480-5885-ND
308N103-ND
CT3038-ND
There are lots more similar. RS will have choices too.

The unturned pot makes no noise 😉
(unless it's completely buggered, then all bets are off)

Is it comedy hour at diyaudio?
assuming not....
You need a 3.3V TOSLINK RX module - wire as per data sheet to a clean 3.3V supply.
Then run a wire from the output pin -> SPDIF2 input.
Toshiba TORX147 is one of the better options but has been out of production since 2008. They can be found without too much difficulty on that auction site.
For systems which incorporate TOSLINK, Toshiba recommend testing using the actual device to check its noise resistance.
Use a simple noise filter on TOSLINK fiber optic transceiving module's power line. If the ripple in the power supply used is significant, reinforce the filter.
The optical module is to be used in an area which is susceptible to radiated noise, increase the shielding by covering the optical module and the power line filter with a metallic cover.

Is possible bypass the digital filter and exclude the oversampling in this DAC module ?

Here's is Soren's post about this. He doesn't advise it but it's possible.
Just some data points with this DAC. My measurements are with Juli@ sound card. First image is a measurement of ESS9018 DAC just to show measurement limits of the ADC. Second image is Soren's DAC direct out (bypassing the balanced/buffer opamps).

Balanced out is not as good and clips when the volume pot is out of circuit.
