Hello,
I volunteer at my church to mix the live sound. I have been asked to video our services.
I want to feed sound from our Mackie CFX16 MrkII mixer direct to A Samsung HDD recorder/DVD writer to record the sound and direct from a Sony camcorder for Video. All sounds simple enough... but for some reason the sound on DVD is very quiet and need to turn up sound right up on TV when playing back. I am using utility out on the mixer and I have the utility gain cranked up all the way up. The 2 AUX sends on the mixer are used for foldback for our band.
Is there better way to do it so the sound is louder on the DVD?
Do I need to build some kind of preamp to boost the signal?
Any suggestions would be appreciated 🙂

what input are you using on the samsung?
a simple 1/4 to rca cable should be all you need.
the manual for the Samsung lists the audio input level as being 2 Vrms but doesn't list impedance so you may be correct that a pre-amp would be required.

Shouldn't be really - essentially inputs are 'high' impedance (usually 20K to 100k), and outputs 'low' impedance (less than 5K) - so you can easily connect them.
Assuming the Samsung specifies 2V?, then that is probably the MAXIMUM you could input, the actual gain (and thus input level) will be auto-adjusting.
the manual (published information) states 2Vrms it's not an assumption on my part.
and if "the actual gain ( and thus input level) will be auto-adjusting." then he shouldn't be experiencing a level problem.
what's your take on the problem?

As he didn't mention what model it might be, how can you check the on-line manual?.

My take is either he may be connecting it wrongly in some way?, or (if such an option even exists?) he's got it set to manual recording level, with the gain turned down.
Generally PA equipment runs at higher signal levels than domestic equipment (domestic is 0.7V or so, PA 1V or so) - so levels shouldn't be a problem.
sorry i may be going off an assumption here but i think the SH 893 is the only device that Samsung makes that is listed as both hdd & dvd but i could be wrong only the OP can clear that up.
i have to assume that he's connecting it wrong also but your not the OP so...

They have made a number of different ones, but none any more - DVD recorders are pretty well dead.
As I suspected, the 2V RMS you mentioned is the MAXIMUM input - and the model you mentioned has no manual settings.
Hello Everyone, Thank you all for your replies. Im sorry haven't been able to get back online sooner. I was at church doing Sound again since posting and took a look at the setup. its a samsung DVDHR755, think its a rather old unit that was donated to us. quick look at the manual online says this model also max 2vrms. I couldn't see any setting in the menu for setting attenuation. I am using a standard 1/4 jack to RCA cable direct to stereo input on the back of the unit. The av output is feed to a small portable dvd player that we are using as a monitor and plug in headphones. I can only just hear the sound through the headphones with headphone volume on full. When I play back the dvd on my TV the picture looks little fuzzy but acceptable . I need to turn sound on tv up almost full to get reasonable volume level.
so your feeding it audio(from your mixer's Utility Out) to where on the samsung? and video from the camera is feed how?
Video is fed from av output port on camera to video rca input on back of Samsung recorder and the sound comes from utility out on mixer to left and right stereo rca input on Samsung recorder. The video and sound output from the samsung then feeds into a small portable dvd for monitoring. The gear is locked away during the week but can take pics next sunday if Its helpfull.
I can borrow one and test. Will see if I can get access to the equipment during the week. I have a test tone generator that can feed into one of the channels of the mixer and will test at different points to work out where the signal is dropping.
so the interconnect between the camera and the recorder for both video and audio is all Rca?
you say your connecting the camera video and audio on the "back" of the samsung (other than the Scart connectors all the RCA's on the back are outputs) i would try using AV3 on the"front" of the samsung (and beware if you try "dvin" for video it will assume it's getting it's audio from the same cable(making the camera the source) the RCA's will be disabled(muted) without seeing a termination (video) at the associated RCA)

to be clear the "audio" rca's on the back are all out's
According to the manual, AV1 on the back is an input, and there are no SCART sockets as it's not a European model.
I would try Tape output, it takes the advantage to be pre-master while Utility is after .Also, utility level adjustment poty goes from -∞ to +10, tape out adj goes to -∞ to +20...
Tape Out is RCA so you need stereo RCA - RCA cable.
Anyway, just to be clear, you're using a cable like this at now ? :
