i recently got an old technics record player from my dad. i have some records, many play fine, but some, at some point (sometimes right when the needle lands on the record) the needle and arm just slide all the way to the end of the record, making a bad sound, and then the needle goes over the label, then the arm lifts and goes back to its stop position and the record player stops. i tried adjusting the weight at the end of the arm to press down on the record as much as possible (if the weight is moved back, then the arm lifts upward away from the record, why would you want that!), and also to adjust the angle of the needle-wrist-thing, but it didnt work. are the grooves on these records so worn down? i doubt it... i think im doing something wrong, but i don't know what.
the sound is rather fuzzy all the time. is there any guide on how to maintain a record player? how do you know when you have to replace the needle? does this have to do with 'anti-skating' (which i tried to adjust but it didnt seem to fix anything.)

er, that would be a skating force ....
adjust the anti-skating force to be roughly the same as your tracking force. Many tables use a spring and a dial. Others use a weight suspended by a thread, to pull the arm towards the outside of the LP.
Use of a test record will get you into the ball park, and listening with your ears should get you the rest of the way there. Look up "anti-skating" on this forum.
