I am looking to redo and update my music / HT setup and in addition to building new main and cent speakers I am looking to build a standalone sub. I currently have a pair of Polk rt2000p towers, each with dual 8" powered subs for my bass. These sound good but I know I can do better.
I plan to build new towers without any powered subs and will then need (or can even now enjoy) a separate sub. Due to floor space issues I would like to maximize the sound with a minimal footprint so I figured a dual driver (12") setup with a vertical configuration would accomplish this well.
Any suggestions?
Thx

Not a dual 12, but here is a triple 10 I did with the NHT 11-083 12 ohm subs. The subs are NLA, but were blown out by Jack Hidley when NHT reorganized. A lot of DIY'ers stocked up, so they show up on the sale forums frequently. I will never need another sub. The sealed design works great for music, and the displacement makes HT amazing.

Now that is what I am talking about! Maybe overkill but certainly worth a look, how tall did it end up being?
Any good alternatives to that driver?

Be careful what you wish for, you may end up with one of these:

No point even considering the WAF on that one; might as well be called the divorcer!

It is 42" tall. That particular sub is a 12 ohm driver, so 3 in parallel yields a 4 ohm load to the amp. I am not aware of any others, except some of the earlier JL Audio W6 line that had dual 6 ohm configuration. But there are some 8 ohm 12's that would fit your dual sub idea. You might consider an end table or coffee table design for WAF.
Hi Kooshball,
The CSS Quartet 10 or 12 might be a good starting point:

Coffee table that stirs your coffee
I built a 12" tall X 16" wide X 36" long (inside dimensions) coffee table with 2 sealed chambers in it.
I used 2-12" floor firing subs, each had 2 ft.^3 of volume behind them.
They were Pyle woofers that are NLA (they said "Pyle Drivers" on the cone 😛), but I choose them for the specs, a very low Q (0.29 IIRC) and mainly a claimed 97 dB SPL 1W/1M, an Opamp labs SM-100 (100 Wrms) powered it quite well.
.
It was made from 3/4" MDF with 1/4" Luan glued onto the outside, corners mitered, stained, polyurethaned and polished to furniture (WAF) standards.
It sounds great, but I wouldn't recommend it for apartment dwellers.
I had it in a house trailer and you could hear it thumping for 3 or 400 yards.
.
Part of the WAF was it had to be kitten proof, as they would squeeze under the thing (it had a 2" clearance above the carpet) and claw the speakers.
After replacing both speakers a pair of 3/4" thick, 15" Iso-baric rings with 1/4" hole chicken wire cured that.
.
I think the floor firing designs have a certain desirable character that possibly has to do with the speakers firing right into carpeting.
