For the mid/bass drivers, I would suggest you to look at the Vifa P17wj. This is a real good performer. You can get it for under $50 USD and it is so good that you could use $100 tweeter with it... I know, you don't want these kind of tweeters . I was just saying that the Vifa are very good mid/bass.
I use them in big MTM tower and like the sound a lot. l

Yeah, these would work, but they seem to be about 70E each...

Briccolo, it might be easier to turn this on the head. What drivers are available to you that you can afford? We can then help on the selection.

Hi all

A friend is looking for a cheap pair of 2 way speakers, for less than 150$ (so, less that 100$ in drivers)

What is good in this price range?

I am tempted to suggest my Arro Clone. I know, I am biased 😀 . I am putting together a small web site to explain the design.

many audax are available, are they all good, or are there some bad drivers on theyr product line?

Hi Bricolo

I have had a quick look though that website and the drivers do seem a little on the expensive side...🙁

I am only really familiar with the carbon fibre and HDA ranges, and looking through some of the specs of the paper cone drivers they seem a little troublesome at the higher end, all fixable, but you may end up spending too much on crossover components to sort out the problems.

I think the way to go is to use the Vitaton I mentioned earlier, along with the Audax tweeter, and probably go for a nice easy 2nd order XO at about 2.2k, as both the drivers will be able to cope with this. You will need to attenuate the tweeter a little as well. It may cost a little more for the drivers, but you will save in the cost of over-complicated XO components.
