Hi all
A friend is looking for a cheap pair of 2 way speakers, for less than 150$ (so, less that 100$ in drivers)
What is good in this price range?

I would definately recommend the Audax TM025F1 as the tweeter, and paired with the budget range HDA 6.5" HP170Z0, it should be within your price range and sound pretty good.
Strange, as they are made in France

In that price range I would go for Peerless drivers.
You can order them from http://www.audiocomponents.nl
You get the best value for money with Peerless

I'm not sure about such a sweeping statement as that, Peter, yes Peerless do make good drivers at reasonable prices, but others make better.

Yes, ofcourse there are better drivers, but you will pay more for the same quality.
Audax used to be very good, but the quality is going downhill since they have been taken over by the Harmann group

What are your opinions on good drivers for peerless prices. Just out of curiousity.

Well the Audax drivers I quoted above are £12 for the Tweeter, and £18 for the woofer. You can't get much cheaper than that.
Morel drivers are also similar money, and whilst there are some real dogs, they have some very nice drivers.

Sorry Peter, Harman have owned Audax for about 7or 8 years, and I regularly buy their drivers and have noticed no problems with declining quality- I suspect you have just fallen for another WWW rumour.
A lot of people look down on the cheaper Audax range because they don't have metal baskets, but the plastic they use seems rigid and well damped, and sounds better than cheap pressed metal baskets.

I always looked at the move to thermoplastic baskets as a big plus... i used to have a nylon front sprocket on my SR500 Thumper -- and i wouldn't hesitate to get another -- plastic done right can be really tuff, and well damped (and cheap!!)
Another option would be a pair of Fostex FE103s in something like a Buschorn.

I just realised I'm confusing Audax drivers😱
There are two, the HP170Z2, and the AP170Z0, the sheilded version. Both will work well, but the AP may be a little more expensive.

I can't find the HP170Z2 on theyr french website, and the .com seems not to work on the "products" page

Hi Gabe
I have used both these drivers but not together!
I would probably use a 2K 2nd order XO frequency, and an L pad on the woofer as it has a bit of a rising response above 1K, of course, all depending on the box and application.

Just checked the French website and the AP170Z0 is still available, depending on price this might be a good alternative, it measures very similarly to the HP170Z2🙂

Hi,
For the mid/bass drivers, I would suggest you to look at the Vifa P17wj. This is a real good performer. You can get it for under $50 USD and it is so good that you could use $100 tweeter with it... I know, you don't want these kind of tweeters . I was just saying that the Vifa are very good mid/bass.
I use them in big MTM tower and like the sound a lot.
Regards,
Daniel
