Considering the different types of editing tasks one can make and the number of available video formats, there is a very wide range of products out there. Since you have not specified what your needs are, I'll start with my personal experience. A while back, using a video capture card, I transcribed some LaserDiscs to my computer. I then did some simple cropping and editing using an open-source application called Avidemux. You can download a copy from Cnet, where you can also find many other free and free-to-try video editing software.
