is there a reasonable portable cd player that can be used in home stereo setup? It would have to have an AC adapter, optical/coaxial output would be a plus. Likely there would be no remote but shuffle button on the unit face would be nice but not required.

Mostly out of production...and portables had the most laser problems.

Just copy over to memory stick, and use that.

Cd transports are the weakness of the format, the sooner you digitize your cds and use a DAP for playback the better. Digital audio players today have so much bang for the buck, and plugging a potable player in your system eliminates power supply noice.

Like line out from the earphone socket, for example an iPhone. Or buy a FM + Bluetooth/USB/SD card amp..or adapter.
Costs all of $6 here, a small adapter with RCA out. It has FM/SD/USB/Aux in...works off mains.
Some friends play songs in the car using Bluetooth, songs on cell phone, car system has reciever.
Totally portable, nothing to wear our or lose (or damage, CDs do get scratched).
