recommend me some loudspeakers

Ok I'm nearing the point where I'm going to start on a set of stereo speakers. These are going to be used mainly (meaning almost entirely) for music listening. Some dvds, but mainly music. Pretty much whenever I'm sitting around working I'll have them running. I'm a rock kind of guy, if you want to get an idea think pink floyd and the song I love rock and roll.

My budget is in the 100-200 range (200 is pushing it, probably more like 150-175 is the upper range but if you have something that'll be a big difference for that extra 25-50 then I'll go for it) in parts for the pair. Not spectacular but hey, I'm not bill gates and I don't have tons of money to spend on this hobby 🙂 I'd prefer something well-documented as I am not the most experienced speaker builder in the world. Up to this point I'm thinking the dayton 3 mtms but I thought I'd post here before I started ordering parts.

I would only recommend the ELFs if they are going to be used with some sort of small subwoofer, like that 8" Sony sub that Best Buy sells (just as a cheap example) or the Athena one that Best Buy sells (as a better solution). If there is no sub in the equation (or a larger driver like a long-excursiton 10" or regular 12" or 15") then I would say check in to the Dayton BR-1s at Parts Express. A friend of mine is buying the kit sometime later this year or early next year and I'll let you know how they are once they come in and get put together. The ELFs, however, seem like an intersting solution. The Super ELFs just plain look cool.

Hmm..well I am building a an 8in peerless sub right now that is supposed to go with the elf 1.5, would this be the best bang for the buck combo or is there another kit elsewhere that is much better for the price? Remember that whatever speakers you guys suggest will have a sub to take care of the lower octave.

Oh and I don't mean to hijack the thread btw since the question is on topic with what you are looking for.

My personal reccomendation

If you were to build the cabinets and X-overs yourself you would be able to construct a pair of Ed Frias DIY's for right around $200. Read the reviews at AudioReview.com. I have two pair myself and cannot find ANYTHING inside of $1,000 that can touch them. By far THE MOST gratifying project I have ever worked on and the most pleasant sounding bookshelves my ears have had the pleasure of listening to.
