Recommend a Preamp!

I'm currently using a simple preamp with a Lightspeed attenuator. Works great. However, I'm a sucker for a project.

I have a pair of ACA amps and an Aleph J in the wings. Can anyone recommend a new preamp to go with these? I see the Mezmerize B1 boards and Burning Amp boards in the store, but I'm open to other suggestions as well. I do plan on using my current preamp with my builds when they're done, but I'm always open to trying new things. Suggestions?

I've been very impressed with both the B1 and the Impasse. Both are easy to build.

The B1 of course isn't strictly an amplifier, it is just an impedance buffer.

The Impasse is an amplifier but doesn't have the whistles and knobs of a conventional pre-amp.

Combine the two and you can dispense with the input transformers of the Impasse.

I can only have one? 🙂 🙂 🙂

The BA-3 will swing enough output voltage to clip an F4. Which is an awful lot more than most people need.

The O2 will swing 7V, more than enough for any power amplifier with gain.

the nice thing about the r2r relay atten is that it does not have a max input voltage. to test my own delta1 system, I built a testing jig to apply voltage to the atten's input, measure its output with a digital fluke meter and then keep stepping the atten down until I get to 127.5db. I used 50v dc as a constant input 'signal' just so that 127db down from there was not totally lost in the noise (for my DMM). show me another input volume control that can take 50volts and still not 'clip' (lol!).

If you decide on the B1, I have a partially populated board for sale.
Doesn't have jfets, but you can still get them and are available from Linear Systems and the store here.

I also recommend the BOZ-J. Hard to beat on quality vs parts count vs cost. Needs two 2sk170 jfets. One per channel. 🙂

Here's a couple of pics of the B1 board. $40 takes it. Board alone is $35.

Thanks for all the replies. The O2 is actually looking a bit promising. I already have a PS board and was thinking of a way to integrate a preamp with a headamp. I was planning on displacing my noisy old Pioneer with my ACA amps and a pre. I also need it to be easy to use so that my kids and wife can turn it on when they need to, without having to use the ACA amps. The other thing is that the O2 is cheap. If I don't like it I'm not out much coin.

The AMB kits look really nice but the boards alone, when I cobble it altogether, are quite pricey. I will keep those on my radar though.
