Why do you want an equalizer? Phono sections have to have an equalizer to match the RIAA curve, but that (in addition to boosting the signal) is why you have a phono section. A separate equalizer is a mixed blessing. It may be able to correct frequency response problems (if they happen to be at the frequencies and width of your equalizer's controls), but they introduce phase changes, and inevitably a certain amount of veiling. I have never found them to be all that helpful, and bad ones are clearly and distressingly audible.
