so it sounds like the electrto harmonix may be worth a punt at arouns £60 for a matched quad set
thanks guys
thanks guys
JUST bought a quad set of these
This big bottle 6CA7/EL34 by Electro Harmonix is a remake of the classic American Sylvania 6CA7 design
to try out, they where cheap enough at £13.50 each and highly recommended so we will give them a try,
I also received from the USA a matched pair of
2 NOS NIB GE 5 Star Triple Mica Blackplate 5670 Twin Triode Tubes (2C51 396A)
for the Shanling cd player output
all I need now is to get hold of some "LM4562" op amps for the cd player, if anyone knows where I can buy these in the UK i would appreciate the help ? I believe these are a great drop in replacement, i was also told the opa 627 was good as well but needs the brown dog adapters as the 627 is a single.
once I have managed these mods I will give it a few weeks to burn everything in, so far I am quite impressed with my new Speakers the LSA A2's.
sound wise the only thing I am missing is some detail in the mid range and a rather flat soundstage, but this could be down to many things ? i have not yet had time to place the speakers where i need them to be for one so we will see what happens when the new mods are in place, thanks for everyones advice

Nice choice on the tubes. I have heard good things about those.
I have to retract my remarks on the Shuguang Hi-Fi series EL34s. While they did sound excellent while they worked, just yesterday one of them burned out in a rather dramatic fashion.
I am running the E-H EL34s (standard bottle) now and I must say they are less mid-rangy than I remembered.
Now I need to go hunting for a spare set. I always like to have spares around. Perhaps the E-H big bottles are in my future.
Regarding opamps; create an account at TI.com and order some samples. The LME49720HA is a better version of the LM4562. It is a TO-99 "can" but the leads can be bent into the right configuration to be installed in DIP8. Another option would be to order 2 samples of the LME49710HA (singles) and then buy an adapter. I have found the adapters from "Sorch Audio" on e-bay to be excellent. E-bay item number 180754044741 for example. Check your CD player first to ensure there is space around the opamp socket to accommodate the dual adapter.
I have tried many opamps in my DAC, including 2x OPA627 in adapter, OPA2132P, AD8599, AD8066, AD8620, etc. , and the two I like best are LM6172 and the 2x LME49710HA in adapter. The AD8599 is excellent in my VSPS phono pre-amp.

Thanks Cogi
I have found the 4562's now, only £2 each and free postage so happy at that. as I use the CD player straight into the Shanling SP80 MONO PWR amps it would make sense to change the op amps in those to the same 4562's don't you think ?
thanks again Keith

Hi Keith,
I hope you trust the source of the opamps. The world is full of fakes, which is why I recently started getting opamps either direct from the manufacturer (as samples) or from Digikey, Mouser, etc.
Samples from TI and AD are even cheaper than 2 quid. 😉
You must have a pre-amp in there somewhere, no? If yes, then I would expect that is where you would find opamps.
Hi Cogi
I bought the op amps from RS Components A highly reputable Co in the UK
So they should be fine, I ordered 10 so enough to do the CDP and the pwr amps
no soldering just push in so should be ok even for a noob like me lol
thanks mate

WELL so far after fitting NOS NIB GE 5 Star Triple Mica Blackplate 5670 Twin Triode Tubes
in the cd player iv'e noticed quite a difference for the better 😀 more detail, more realism, better seperation, it's not massive but big enough to notice straight away and they have now burned in yet, the down side has been a little tiny bit of sibilance on voices, only a bit but hey thats real people do have that in their voices, next job will be op amps when i can figure out how to take the cd player apart ? anyone know how ?
so cogi it's a good start mate fingers crossed for the other mods 😀

well guys WOW 😱
so now I have swapped all 6 op amps and left the cd player running for a couple of hours before having a quick listen, now bear in mind I have not yet set my speakers up properly, both for the soundstage and room acoustics, the LSA A2's have a second rear firing tweeter that can be adjusted to help for room correction.
so far I have changed the stock cd100t 6n3 valves and now I have changed the opamps to the LM4562 from the standard 2604, the slight sibilance I reported after changing the stock valves, which wasn't really bad has all but gone now playing Damien Rice "SO" revealing sounds that previously where just noise can now be easily recognised for what they actually are 😀
I really am quite pleased that such small changes have been richly rewarded
in terms of sound quality, the Shanling CDT 100 and the Shanling SP 80 Mono Power amps are certainly capable of mixing it with some of the more top end hifi kit with some minor modifications, or to put it another way, I have heard much more expensive hifi that did not make the Shanling kit sound like it was out of it's depth so to speak. What I have accomplished so far has made me feel like I wan't to take the modifications to the next level, but right now i''m not shure what that will entail ? for now I await some other new parts....well Valves so I can try out various combo's to see which I like best .
