I'm looking to either hack an old Cambridge Ensemble passive subwoofer into a powered subwoofer, or build one using one of the Silver Flute drivers from Madisound.
Either way....I need an amplifier. Super-low-distorion audiophile grade stuff, UCD-derived super-sampled wonders of engineering, and elegant Tripath masterpieces....need not apply. I'm looking for no more than .1% THD at 100hz. Not Khz, but one hundred hertz.
I'd like to be able to use a cheap power supply - ideally, the amp would run on either 12v, 24v, or 48v (the voltages most commonly found in industrial surplus SMPS power supplies.) Only about 40 watts of low-distortion power is really needed, although more is certianly a good thing.
I should also mention that I'm no expert at SMD work; though I think I could handle SOIC stuff well enough, anything with itsy-bitsy leads is out of my leauge. Through-hole is, of course, ideal.
So, any reccomendations? Something I could get for free from TI (huzzah for samples!) would be excellent.

I've already ordered the boards and parts, but might have an extra kit left over if you're interested. These haven't been tested yet either, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Regardless, I plan to get a board built up as soon as possible once everything comes in.

They are universal input voltage so they will work in the US....and the seller tells me that he will ship to the US.

I think a 41hz.com AMP11 would probably be perfect. It takes a single supply up to 36V and will deliver the amount of power your looking for.
Its only $36 + $7 shipping; can't beat that.

Sorry to jump in, but how would this work -- do you just use the amp (like the class-D) and put a passive low pass filter on its output before the sub?
I have similar requirements, but don;t want to go for a big plate amp...😕

No worries Anonymous1. And I'll lay off the power supplies.
I suppose I do have a hidden agenda.....but it is only to get someone else (who knows more about these things than I do) to try one and share some ideas on implimentation.
