Hey Guys,
New to this forum. Was hoping to find some info on recapping a 'factory' Aleph 5. Looks like most of the info here is on the DIY amps which look different. I have a 20 year old Aleph 5 that may need recapping. First time attempting this.
Should I replace with exactly what's there? Is there any upgrading I can do? I took a look but could not see the capacitor values on the large blue power supply capacitors. Does anyone have that info?
Appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Will

pics, just in case
edit: anyway, you need to open it, see what's value and size of big computer-grade caps (Dia , length), then search by that
though - it's worthy checking them ( ESR meter around?) while certainly replacing smaller ones
or ..... replace smaller ones , then if there is no hum and perceptive lack in bass department, you can leave Biguns untouched

Thank you for the reply.
I count 6 x 220uF and 8x.47uF caps on the main board. I figured since I have it all apart, might as well replace the large power caps as well... given its age.
Funny you mention the hum... that is why I am looking at doing this. Recently it has developed a hum through the speakers. Louder when the amp is first turned on, but decreases in volume as it warms up. Fully warmed @130 deg F, you can barely hear it from the listening position. Only up close. My OCD however is telling me this was not there before and I need to address it 🙂
just replace those 220uF on pcb for start ; use any brand name caps, you can err 100%+ in value without problems (so 470uF)
0u47 are OK, no electrolytics
while you there, measure dimensions of big caps
though, if you loose your temper while troubled with all that hassle, feel free to send it to OPLDF, it'll be well taken care of
🙂
(or - if you want to do everything in one stint, measure big caps, buy new ones, and replace everything at once ...... that amp deserve that)
