Hey everyone! I made an account here to gather some information for an upcoming DIY project that will also be my first. I've been doing a lot of reading up on DIY audio, especially towards Tannoy DIY. Before I come close to starting I'd like to get a quick 'reality check' so to speak to see if its feasible getting into this whole thing.
I will be aiming for a set of Tannoy speakers with the looks of something out of the Prestige line (I love the look as much as I hate the price tag), combined with say a LSU/HF/III.LZ/8 or Eaton HPD 295A driver (both 10" to match the size on Kensington or Turnberry cabinets). The idea is that I want a set of Tannoy speakers that I can afford, looking like something I can't afford. The problem with this, from what I've read so far, is that every cabinet serves its purpose for the corresponding driver. The 10" HPD is fitted in an Eaton cabinet for example, so when mounted in a Kensington-sized cabinet it will probably perform completely different. I just don't like the look of a GRF or any cabinet with a huge port.
Long story short, I'm trying to find out if its a fool's errand going after a set of 10" drivers to build my own 'faux-prestige' Tannoys. I hope I explained correctly, English not being my native language.🙂
EDIT: To give an idea of skill level and ability, working with (ply)wood/veneer/soldering is covered. I'll be working together with my father on this, who is more than capable of putting together a set of crossovers, with me doing the wood working. Although we are beginners in building speakers, it will be a nice challenge working on a project like this.
