The STA-2100 was Radio Shack's top of the line receiver in 1979, costing $600.

It's certainly worth restoring it to its original specification - not sure that modifying it would make it 'better'.
How is it performing at the moment? Is it faulty or substandard in some way?

As a proud and happy owner of sta2250 who tried to mod it to the "superior model" , the sta2100 and reverted to sta2250 original schematic after fail, i can tell you for sure that sta2050 is a better sounding amplifier .Very little mods needed to revert the sta2100 to the "inferior sta2250" 🙂
I envied the sta2100 as it has the better tuner, but the sta2250 has the better amp!
Turn its amplifier into the sta2050 amplifier as i can't turn the sta2250 tuner into the sta2100 tuner!
One more thing: i modified the sta2250 to work in class a with the aid of a fan and the sound was awesome.Unfortunately, the sta250 doesn't have the space for a big cooler to support that mod.I think that the sta2100 with a lower voltage power transformer can give you the opportunity to run it in class A with its original cooler.
I think that the sta2250 was one of the best amplifiers made in the 70's as it is rock stable down to 2 ohm loads.

I don' t have the actual receiver, but I have made a copy-clone of that scheme slightly modified in meaning of used transisotrs with others, chosen by their specs from input to power ones which are now 2sc3264 and its oponent pair, and also some values of a few resistors and caps have been changed to a small degree.It works, and sounds fine with no problems at all like offset or temp.instabillity, but I'm not sure if this amplifier gives the best performance in meaning of pumping and controlling bass at near maximum levels, clipping etc. with theese bad small speakers..so i am planning to hook it up on bigger loudspeakers. l listen on 2 speakers on one channel in paralell.( the other channel ready for use and I am listening) but as i have mentioned, the present speakers are real crap, they distort at higher levels.Thank you for reply and information of that receiver's cost back in the days.I am still interested if I can make some easy re- mods of this schematic in order to get better sound (power and quality) 😀
If you don't have the original...it's better to reproduce a modern amplifier then...It was good for the 70's...not anymore!Its radio section was the real gem, as it was amongs the best tuners ever made, i mean sta2100 still is in a top 3 tuners ever made!
Hi!, and Thank You!I will need time to see sta 2250 schematick, and i forget to mention that i use only power amp of this schematick as it is on the attachment, nothing more on the left side, to the pre amp section.

It would have been a remarkable piece of history if restored, but cloning...no way!The sta2250 is only 2x50w and has a 480watts transformer...Its bass-mid-treble eq has no distortion over the power amp, its tuner is one filter less than the 4 filters tuner of sta2100.I imagine the sta2100 having 800w...1kw power supply which is very unusual for today's standards.
