Re-purpose five and seven channel amps?

I have one of those olds SONY's STR DE-875 didnt cost me a tenner though cost me $1600AU back in 2000 new of course, was my savings from giving up the smokes.
Always seemed like a ballsy amp compared to anything I have obtained since, only got replaced due to no HDMI but still works nicely

Go for models that costed 1000 or more when new!
If you want to part them out, even go into higher models. Some 3-5k class models can be had for under 200 EUR now, some even go for not much more than shipping costs, when defective. The transformer alone is usually more expensive than the whole machine (though you might want to check the voltages first, before buying...). And the higher modesls do use some good reusable parts (and also crap parts, to keep costs down) - Those AV receivers are a dieing species, I still feel kind of sorry to plunder them to the metal bones.

Harman AVR7000 have nice sounding amps but the bottom power supply board gets hot and need capacitors and other stuff. Really much higher power then in specs. About 2x150w /8ohm and doubles at 4ohm. Digital dsp board not that bad either but the analog inputs are totaly crap for some reason. Whats great is that it already have jumpers at the back for all the 5 amplifiers.

Seems you got it 🙂
These monsters now out of fashion are dirt cheap, full of really nice difficult to source and expensive components, and on top, if they work they are useful as they are, without cannibalizing. I use one big Rotel and one Sony for various purposes, always reliable and with volume control.
For scavenging parts, and for general use, I would only advise to go for top models of the era, price difference is less than 100 € . Really cheap models will not give best parts, neither performance, but they will waste your time that is also valuable, Go for models that costed 1000 or more when new!
Ha! I suppose you're right😉! Esp based on responses on an older thread due to the bump, no doubt. But yeah, It would be hard for me to cannibalize a completely working model, per se. At worst, I tend to keep them for maybe or as a backup for another piece of gear, or potentially and more likely as gifts to those like hifi ignorant nieces and nephews and/or friends who appreciate them and put them back into use, etc. But especially the last 3-4 years, as anything remotely able to be labelled as vintage, has otherwise skyrocketed to twice the price of what one could pay for a completely recapped/rebuilt by a local service tech, no less, piece of gear.......even for that exact same model that is non working or being sold "as is-for parts" comparatively speaking. There are tons of TOTL, herniated back when picking it up level gear, from around the late90s early 2000s (at least what I referring to for the most part). In fact, normally I'll tend to exclude mentioning such jewels by model number or brand, especially when creating a thread, so it doesn't result in some skyrocketing prices for said models. But yeah,I actually may end up keeping that 4803/2 I mentioned....lord knows the primary reason they can be bought for so cheap is lack of hdmi etc. But man, bravo for the guys who said they snagged similar such receivers with remotes!! That's also not a normal negative as one can always program a 20 buck remote from walmart to navigate enough, etc. But even with said 4802/3 being in that small window wherein they used those funky lcd remotes, which were also RF vs infrared, I'll still hang onto it for as long as it works. I still can't believe I bought it and what I use as a processor for my theater for fifty spot! At a store that sells electronics, records, and musical instruments, no less. It changed my recommendations for a lot of my friends who, of course, send everyone to me, for answers as to which x,y, or z piece of gear they should purchase. Cheap hdmi splitter issues aside, it's sooo worth it to get an HD fury, snag an old TOTL AVR or amp from said era (most pre hdmi, although prices do level out with ones at the 1.3/4 hdmi era) and then pair it with an upper scale brand Processor.....esp as regular people desire atmos right now as much as they desired 3D reg Tvs 10yrs ago.....even those with theater rooms with projectors that ask me to set up their systems, typically after a move or whatever. 2 channel is a diff story, of course, but even so, these powerhouses sound better than even new stereo receivers they would otherwise buy at a chain store. I suppose the only reason it is still feasible is because no matter how money hungry the E-Vultures are, they (as mentioned above) have no interest in trying to make a profit by finding a way to safely ship these beasts and also avoid aggravating their backs/disks etc. Either way, it's hard to make a profit vs other amps and such just due to shipping. Long live the degenerative disc disease epidemic in this country !!!🙂 ANd I say that already having a spinal fusion done in my early 30s.

I’ve done this type of recycling project a few times, got a ‘broken’ Denon avr3300 for a few bucks. These units had a known problem with the dsp chip/card coming loose, i gutted it removed the dsp and everything else I could remove, found a 12v trigger for the board and Shazam 5 105watt (supposedly) amp channels. Now this amp won some mag avr amp of the year back in the day, seemed like it was made well with a huge transformer and forced air cooling and could again supposedly drive all the channels to max output simultaneously. It ran dvc subs sufficiently and was very useful for running 4 channels of an active crossover. The key here is your starting avr, they are not all the same or worthy of the time.

Yep, both marantz and denon advertise 70% of the wattage spec, 20-20000Hz and all channels driven, even today once beyond the slim or bottom of the barrel units. My 4803 has what seems to be, pretty similiar HUGE toroidal PS that was in an SR 8001 marantz unit (unforunately or fortunately in terms of this thread)....It seemed to have some failure due to the failure of caps that reduce incoming AC noise.....I never even got around to seeing if that was the issue, as it was a PITA, just to get other boards disconnected and outta the way just to be able to get that particular board out. It was the unit though, that led me to consider possibly buying various other units down the road, as I noticed all the extra expensive parts (when building your own DIY seperates, etc.) My next objective is to get very familiar, with building, or learning to build, linear power supplies. Until then, that fat PS, that I still have no clue what it's ratings or secondaries are rated at, will sit quietly up in a closet until I can repurpose it. Otherwise a shame as it sounded great for almost 2 mins).

I will say, FWIW, one last benefit......for me personally, is that for some reason, my ears highly prefer the Audessey on these types of older receivers in particular. I have no idea why, but I tested it on 3 drastically different speaker types in a surround sound setup, and every time, the ones with audeyssey DSX(no atmos but the option to select front height and/or front wide speakers) sounded better than the new Audessey 32XT, even with the extra Apps and whatnot. I suppose I'm just glad my 50 spot special satisfies my needs by far, for video watching surround sound. I really should unload a virtually new marantz SR6013 soon....or really well over a year ago when it had more warranty, now that it's beyongd user error on my part, for my ears using any of my systems. To have an excuse to buy LPs or more parts from diyaudio store.

I use to buy 5.1 receivers all the time for 20 to 30 bucks.
Thought the same, maybe multiple amps for active someday.
Once I got in there, what a dread to get something out of it.
Boiled down to, they had useful transformers sometimes.
Something I did with one unit with a very gone preamp. Used the transformer
Removed some transistors too, waste of time never used them.
Realizing id be making my own filters, then needing multiple amps.
The popularity of LM3886 even 20 years ago was more than good
to just buy a board and know exactly what was going on.
Having learned passive crossovers since. Realized that active crossover
was more a crutch to me, thinking it was easier.

Long story longer, I still have one receiver working fine in my shop.
And most the 30 dollar wonders, I gave to younger friends for their first apartments.
Many being standard 5.1 they actually experienced darn good sound for movies.
Rather than cheesy speakers in the flat screen TVs.
They serve better for intended purpose. plug in and go.
If broken and transformer is healthy, yank it.

I was actually given a multi channel Rotel power amp a few years back.
It is a little one being only 30W per channel but that is more than enough sometimes. They are not that cheap here in Oz but when talking about Watts per dollar they are great value
Edit
I don't think I would bother with cheap receivers but working multi channel power amps are a different story IMO

I've got a Rotel RB 985 (100 wpc X 5) sitting on my "to work on" shelf. I used it as a stereo amp for several years until it just sort of petered out a few years ago. No bad electrical smells, no big noises, it just sort of stopped working. I would love to see if I can get it up and running again. If not, I may cannibalize it. That monster toroidal transformer alone holds a lot of appeal.

Yep to mention, little things......even an AMC 2100 I have on my wto work on shelf = Nice toroidal PS, but man I wanna say 3 sets of the exact binding post that the diyaudio store......or maybe parts connection sells for $29.00......already more than I paid for it by 4 bucks. I will try and get that one working though. It's got the welltronics sreen printing on the back, and sounds every bit as good as NAD and B&K 140 amps......I either just blew an easy to replace fuse or maybe an output , as I didn't realize it was on when hooking up to a speaker and fliiping the bridged switch......oops!! But at the very least, what hits my mind first, is usually something like "I can populate then stuff a MinMax Pass Amp within this chassis.....and maybe use xformer as a linear PS to boot!", etc.

I was just reminded of this thread.
Worth mentioning that for last 6 months I'm using one not very glorious basic Sony (paid for it 10€) as test amp for TT motors, has volume control and 3 amps that I need, other 3 forgotten... Very fit for purpose and 10€ is nothing if I had to make own test rig with 3 amps and precision attenuator
