quote function

...I see people doing multiple quotes and dividing them up, how is this done?

Funny icon to the right of the QUOTE button.

Click that on each post you wish to quote. It turns red. Now hit QUOTE.

{EDIT} It seems to matter what order you click the

s in; that seems to be reflected in the order that quotes appear in your Reply. I got you and Cal switched while I was messing around.

Don't forget the 'multiquote' button down at the bottom right of everyone's post. That allows you to quote as many different posts as you need all in one.

If I want to split a single large post into sections then I just quote it and then copy the entire quoted text (copy and paste) and then just repaste for each bit editing as needed.

Well thanks for at least asking and making the effort to get it right. The quote function seems to be very difficult for a lot of people. I don't know why, but I have to fix a lot of quotes.
The basic quote function in BB code looks like this:
[quote]This is quoted text, blah, blah, blah[/quote]

Notice how the tags work, the open and close of a code. For example:
[bold]Big Bold Text[/bold]

There are a number of automated ways to get BB code tags like this, but you can always add them or edit them by hand. If you leave off a bracket or don't close the tag properly, it won't work. Normally you see them only in edit mode, they show up here because I've turned the code off in this post.

Thanks Pano. I made a mess of it a few times, and could see the potential for, if not the actual confusion it caused. I'm not very IT literate and tend to get impatient with it, but I realised what a powerful tool the quote function is when used properly, and of course I can take my time to respond and get it right. By the way, I think the way this site is run is a model of decency all round. It is the only forum I have any dealings with. I haven't been here long, but I think I'm going to stay🙂

> I first read it that he wanted to...

It could be either way; I veered different. Partly because I had only dimly noted the multi-quote function and this was an excuse to mess with it. Both/all answers may be useful to somebody.

+1. On another forum I carry a mop. Some days un-tangling mangled quotes is the only mop-work I do.

The first forum I was on, late 1980s, the sub-wizop's gentle rule was minimum quoting, just to give context. Why repeat a whole message already on the board? (And disk-space and download time were precious.) Easy full-message quoting fills the Reply box and people lose track where to type.

Old habit means I grab just-enough and offset it from my words. Which is why after trying multi-quote, I'm manually snipping this together. I could add attributions, even link-backs (below), but in this thread I think the quotes can be found.

Pano> I've turned the code off in this post.

I have never seen noparse before. CODE or {} are less satisfactory.

Yes, the noparse tag is handy for discussion like this, where you want to show code.
If you look carefully at the quote in edit mode, you'll see more detail.

See, diyAudio gets things done as a team. 🙂
Where is says QUOTE=Cal Weldon will make that top line of Originally Posted by Cal Weldon. The semicolon and number is the link back to the post that contains the original text. That's very handy for backtracking and finding context.

Multiquote: It is very handy. And yes, it lines them up in the order you choose them. Of course cut and paste are your friends there, if you don't like the order.

As for the extent of quotes. We do not like to see the entire post just above quoted. It's useless and cluttered. That is a lot of what I fix here. Some forums have replies nested so far down into the quote stack that you can barely read them. We don't like that.

Is it necessary to add the semicolon and the number to restart the quote, if you see what I mean?

No, you don't have to add those. They just make the little blue quote link button. The number is the actual post number in the database.

For example without the semicolon and the post number.
