Hello I have a pair of quicksilver 8417 monoblocs. I have done some of the Uncle Ned mods. He states that GZ37 rectifiers can bve used in place of the 5ar4's . if this is so can I use 5u4g as I like like the coke bottle shape but not the price of gz37.

Very different animal. It's a filament diode rather than a heater-cathode diode. That means you need a CT 5V winding on the transformer, and you'll see some major differences in warm-up time.

Sy is 100% correct. I would not use anything other than a 5AR4 or a GZ37.
One set of my "Quicksilvers" is run every day and has zero rectifier problems. Check out the back posts and install the diodes
in the picture that I posted. It is kinda the best of both worlds.
