Hello all.
I got the idea to build a small, simple loudspeaker for my little sister for christmas, using a fullrange driver to keep the cost low. I fell for the W4-1320 bamboo-fiber driver the moment I saw it, and I have sketched out an enclosure and a filter for it.
However, I don't have any experience designing filters whatsoever, so any help with it would be most appreciated.
Here's how the filter looks laid out in SpeakerWorkshop. It's supposed to compensate for a 170x258 mm baffle and reduce a fairly wide 2 dB peak around 1500 hz. But knowing me, it probably does the exact opposite.
This is an idea of the design i'm going with.
I was hoping to start building next week, but I still feel uncertain about the filter. If you could give me a quick "Nay" or "Yay" that would be awesome.
Thanks.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hi Nwalmaer-
Did you ever build with the W4-1320SA? I like the looks and design of this speaker (there are a very few 4" speakers with truncated frames).
I did notice on the Tang Bang website the impedance curve is rough, is it audible?

I don't use a filter and i've added a super tweeter on back. Maybe increase the size of your baffle rather than making them so thin. These drivers are not perfect but playing them full out without any filter produces a very satisfying sound.
I recommend NO filter and a wider baffle. Just my opinion.
Peace,
Godzilla

Hey.
Suprised to see this thread bumped all of a sudden.
But yes, I did build with them. The project is documented here: http://attlid.eu/swift/
I love them, still use them. A lovely driver for sure.

Nwalmaer,
1) Those speakers are gorgeous.
2) That writeup is enormously informative for any kind of speaker noob. Thanks!
3) Scandinavian humor FTW.

Thank you very much!
And once again I would recommend this driver to anyone. I'd say the only competitor in the 4" class is the CSS FR one, which afaik is built by Tang Band aswell and shares alot with the W4-1320.

Great write-up! and wonderful looking speakers! That is one tight leather wrap around the speaker opening. I wish Parts Express sold those here in the states. Thanks for sharing
Parts express sells the same driver with a round frame in the US.
I see that now...thanks.
