I have an old 2 channel lafayette reciever and want to build a little 8 inch sub for it. My question is, can I build an external crossover for each channel that will route the low end (100hz and below etc.) to the sub and then send the rest on to the bookshelf speaker? Or am I going to run into problems with impedance and SPL and all manner of other things?
Maybe, but you could use around 250uF nonpolar series capacitor for the full range.
This will even out the impedance load on the receiver, and reduce the stress on the full range as well.
I suppose you could just use a sub on one channel, unless you want to have two of them.

This can be done, but it will be a little inefficient since you don't want to connect the outputs of each channel straight together to run the sub. If you can manage this, then go ahead. Some would begin with the premise of using a separate sub channel.
Another option, use two subs and keep your existing amp. As long as you select the subs to play at the correct level, you'll have two for your multi-sub setup.

Yes... but IMO you will need 3rd order filters minimum(4th preferrable) to get satisfactory results and that will cost a good sum, enough to make buying a plate amp for the sub a viable alternative.
