You say you can not attenuate to zero. Yet this exact plan with a properly connected audio taper dual potentiometer was the core of many-many fine hi-fis, even in broadcasting where 2V levels were nominal. There are many ways to connect a pot and I can not see yours from here. Or from your terse posts.

I understand why the new guys don't call it by its right name. And that last drawing is tripped-out. But is it a White Cathode Follower. Has been since 1943.

What I meant was that the negative of the pot is connected to the negative of the RCA's.
The pot itself in not grounded any othe way.
RCA have ground and signal. positive and negative are not appropriate for AC signals!! You RCA ground and pot ground all need to sonnect to circuit ground for a volume pot.
