Question for engineers about enclosure stiffness

Thanks GM, I tried to translate that ‘caisson w sable - onken’ article but there’s no option the way it’s downloaded. It seems from the pictures it doesn’t matter if the walls touch at the edges and it also looks to be about a inch gap they’re working with. I believe I can work that into my 15” woofer modules (including maybe some granite caps for mass loading) that will be bottoms for some 10” mtm.
What will be the internal box is braced fairly well but I can add more if needed, the outer box will be made from 1” furniture grade plywood and I have enough to go up to a 1.5” gap all the way around. Already have the materials…..the inner box (see pic) is a kit which seemed fairly reasonable price vs labor.

I don’t want to distract from the OP but I thought my project to be on topic.

I've listened to that same Onken cabinet in the article many times. It's heavy as *%@# but is astonishing how much it does not sound like a speaker. For me it's the benchmark, I've never heard any other bass cabinet that clean.

I went back and reread the article, since i wasn't there for the build. The walls are 15mm thick plywood, with a 15mm gap for sand, except at the back were it's a 30mm gap. The front baffle is not sand filled. 15mm was chosen as thick enough to withstand the pressure of the sand, but not so thick as to have many self resonances.

The inner and outer boxes are connected by 20x20mm plaques of the same plywood to keep them from shifting. The author admits that some sort of elastic damping material might be better, but the wood seems to work well. (I can attest) The box has a few heavy braces inside, as you can see - they are attached where the 20x20 standoff plaques are.

Note: These were build with Nantex plywood which hasn't been make in ages. It was amazing plywood. Very heavy and dense, and about as hard as iron. I used the 25mm version on some Altec cabinet and drilling and cutting it felt like working with cast iron.
Use high quality plywood.

Thanks Pano,
I’ve been trying to translate a few of the words and found myself getting more confused than I usually am! 😀

This falls exactly in line with what I was thinking of doing……..is there anyone here that has a translation app/program that can repost the article in English? I’ve tried everything I can do on a iPad 🙁

Caisson W sablé (G.Philippon)

Edit…..so 15mm? I’d be better off using 3/4 on the outside also instead of the 1” I already have or do you think it would matter? The inner box is 3/4 Baltic birch all ready to assemble.

Frangus…..if I’m unduly impinging on your thread just say so and I’ll stand down. 🙂
