Hi, any aussies out there know how much customs would charge to import a 12" sub driver into Australia?
I had problems with other types of imports, ended up costing more than it was worth, AFTER i paid ebay "shipping" costs...
Thx

The key to importing from the USA (other countries as well), is to have it sent via USPS (US Postal Service) and not by Fedex, UPS or other carriers. As long as it's sent via a postal service you can import quite a bit and I have never paid duties or GST on any item and I think the most expensive was around US$250.
Here's some general rules from Australian Customs:
LOW VALUE IMPORTS.
You do not have to pay any customs duty or GST on low value imports.
The rules for low value imports are:
1. Each import by post must not be valued at more than $1000.
2. Each import by air or sea must not be valued at more than $250.
3. For each import, the total customs duty and GST that would
normally be payable must not be more than $50.
You just have to make sure the supplier will ship via USPS and airmail is not much more expensive than surface mail. I normally get deliveries from the US within 5-8 days.
Customs duty is 5% and is based on the selling price of the goods and GST of 10% is based on the selling price + duty + shipping costs + insurance.

Ditto what rabbitz said.
I imported some Lambda bass drivers a few years ago and had them sent via USPS (all in individual boxes) - and they came through without charge. Same with the books I get from the US and UK.
Post is the way to go if the seller will do it for you (and most will, for the business). BUT, make sure that the items are packed well (preferably a box within a box) as they can get some biffs along the way. Offer a bit extra for better packaging and you should be right. One of my drivers packages had the outer box breached by a probable drop, so I'm glad the packaging was strong.

I've just bought a tempest driver from the us, sent by USPS and that arrived in perfect condition. Took 6 weeks though , but only cost $60 USA - > UK.

Cool! Thanks fellas. So does that mean the low valued USPS imports like this get delivered to your door? Or do you still need to pick them up from customs? How do customs know that your goods are low valued? Do you call them before it arrives or something and then it will get delivered to your door??
Sorry for the newb questions, but i'd like to save unnecessary trips to tulla. hehe

Yep... right to your door like a normal parcel posted here. The seller puts a customs declaration sticker on it with the value etc and someone in the postal service must check that when it arrives in Oz.
All you do is place your order, specifiying USPS, then sit back and wait for the white van to pull up with your package. You don't have to do a thing except thank the person for delivering it. 😉

Awesome!

All i need now is to buy that last Shiva off ebay and i'm set!

Canada's official post office is (appropriately enough) called Canada Post. Though i've not shipped anything to any other continent, i believe the same rules apply as were mentioned with regards to USPS. UPS is evil anywhere and is to be avoided; certainly some of the highest brokerage fees i've ever seen (and i'm in the warehousing/shipping biz).

Erm, ok does that mean I can ask someone in Canada to ship to me via USPS on ebay? Sorry I'm confused.
Ok so UPS is a bad choice, thx Scott. So what's a good alternative?

USPS = US Postal Service which is the same as our Australia Post and Canada Post. They are treated as No1 on the general rules (post 2). I've had several deliveries via Canada Post and no hassles.
UPS = United Parcel Service and a carrier like Fedex and to be kept away from in these circumstances. They are treated as No2 on the general rules.
So don't confuse USPS with UPS.
Which Shiva you looking at? If it's an 8 ohm then the VCs have to be wired in parallel, if it's 4 ohm then the VCs have to be wired in series.... to suit amp impedance.
Hopefully, your amp will be shipped Thursday. BTW... what do you need and amp for if you don't have a driver (J/K) 😉

Thankyou for clearing that up!! SO all i do is tell them to post it... geez not that hard.
Well its an almost brand new original Shiva Mark I dual 8 ohm.... I heard they were pretty good, and actually had more excursion than the later models. I just want to build a nice sounding sub, so after reading lots of posts I think its worth importing a Shiva if i can find it. But I don't want to be stung for excessive postage so I'm trying to sort that all out.
Imagine: Your brother purchases some expensive stuff on ebay for the first time, sends it through the post and it gets held up at customs.... you have to waste petrol driving all the way to the airport, you have to pay $50 just to be allowed to fill a form, look up the duty rate on the goods (quickly before they
shut), calculate the duty and GST, and end up forking out another $230 on GST after paying ebay shipping just to receive the item. Now you know why I like to know exactly how much I'll be out of pocket before I do anything.
PS yeah I b.s a little, i dont have the box ready yet, but the idea is there, i just need to scab some offcut mdf from a local kitchen fitter 😉

Great... looks like id be paying just under AU$400 to get this Shiva posted to my doorstep even using Canada Post.
Is the Shiva Mark I really that good?
But what else can i get for $400 anyway?

Is the Shiva Mark I really that good?

????
Damo.... have you got those numbers right as A$400 for a 12" Shiva is mighty expensive and they retailed in Oz for around A$273 when you could get them? 😕
If it's the one in Canada for US$119.99 then with shipping should work out about A$285 (a stab), which is still quite expensive for a used driver and remember these have foam surrounds which have a limited life span of around 10 years. If the driver is already a few years old.... work it out.
I'd reassess and look at the other possibilities and don't only look at sealed.... keep the mind open on vented or passive radiator as there are other alternatives.
I won't make any suggestions due to my commercial interests but I'm sure others have suggestions.

Yep thats the one, but seller said US$165 for express post, US$100 for regular and I'm impatient. 😀 Don't think i could wait 4-6 weeks... Hmmm, rushing things is bad I know, but I need to play with this sub while I still have holidays hehe.
Agreed, that's wayy too expensive for a used driver.
I don't really care if you have commercial interest I just need a decent driver and plans for a box to go with it.
How much is a 12" PR bundled with say, one of the new peerless drivers. This could make up for the lower excursion of these drivers compared to Shiva yes?
I know you have a solution rabbitz.... Can you throw in simple dimensions for the box too? I don't think I have access to a program to simulate a PR and a driver in the one box 😛

Oh, I'm not very smart today, there's already a post on this.... Using the Peerless XLS driver 830500 and a PR in a 35L box!
So a "moving mass of 425g in the slave" means you stick a dead weight onto the PR to tune the box config to the right resonant frequency? This is what they mean by tuning the box to 20Hz? Or PRs come in different weights? More dumb questions.....
(btw the amp i ordered is PERFECT for this setup, with highpass at 17hz!!)

Yes you stick weight on the PR to tune to the right frequency. Yes some PRs come in different weights, but most allow you to add some more.
