Hey all.
I'm about to start building a DAC (the audiosector dac, from the vendors bazaar forum), and am planning to put the power supply in a seperate case (providing two +/0V lines, seperating power for the digital and analog sections). I'm now thinking about what's the best way to wire it to the DAC, and currently have three options.
1) Use four pin XLRs on each case and wire them directly (only earth the PSU case)
2) Use five pin XLRs on each case, allowing an earth wire to the DAC case, and also allow a shielded cable (shield connected at the PSU end)
3) Use four pin XLR on the DAC end, and 5 pin on the PSU end, hence connecting the shield to the PSU earth, but not running an earth wire to the DAC.

Hi,
the XLR shell is electrically connected when using the screw terminals.
That adds an extra pole.
I would use 5pin.
Use the long sleeve (pin1) for earth wire.
Use the shell for earth shield.
Use pins 2 to 5 for two sets of flow and return.
Can you source shielded 5core?
Can you effectively prevent mains escaping down the umbilical to the DAC if there is a catastrophic failure inside the PSU?
If an absolute yes, then consider deleting PSU to DAC earths. Otherwise for your and your loved ones safety keep the DAC earthed.
As an aside, where is the mains smoothing? and the second stage decoupling? and the regulators? Does this address the umbilical inductance and achieve low impedance supplies?

I haven't seen shielded 5 core, only 4 core, which is why I was toying with the idea of not earthing the second chassis. Best bet will be to make my own umbillical cable and add a shield to it (it will be a short cable though, definitely no more than two feet).
The PSU portion will hold the toroid transformers and the first filter caps.
The DAC side will have the common mode chokes, resistor, and second filter caps (the schematic is in the audiosector forum). The regulators are on the DAC board itself.
