Quad amps

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies.
First of all,I want to change the R33VOLA potentiometer on the Quad 33 pre-amp,and am wondering if there are any other makes of more audiophile quality pot that would fit the job, perhaps giving better quality than the regular R33VOLA.
Also, has anybody had experience with cancelling out the left/right balance switch. My technician here thinks it could be a good idea.Any opinions?

thanks,

In all honesty if you remove everything from a Quad 33 which is really bad for the sound there'll be nothing left. Unless you're really attached to the casework. Looking at the circuit, it seems possible to short (5) and (6) and get rid of tone controls and balance. It is certainly not worthwhile to improve the volume control. IMO, you'd be better off selling it to someone who wants to own a Quad and building a simple pre instead.

Sorry. I'm wrong. There is also a NFB connection from (7), so you might need a 10k resistor between (7) and (6) as well.

I concurr (and i've owned a half-dozen 33s (and a 22)). The 303 is worth doing some tweaking too -- a local fellow did a major revamp of this pair of 303 monobloks

and they are quite good.... i've tried & tried to get him to write an article -- he is willing to let the info out just not willing to write it up.

Dave,

Your bud with the monoblocks rocks. Of course, you have to like them in the first place. I still remember the shock after i first saw a 303. So which side is the front then? And how do you take out the crumbs?

I have opened mine at least half a dozen times thinking i should utilise the ugly case for something after all. Turntable power supply? A car battery charger? (And i need one right now - both batteries in my wife's Pajero died this morning) Somehow nothing fits there well. It still remains a Quad.
