My pair of 988's suffer when i try to use them as main front speakers for dvd viewing. There is a sort of cracking or distorsion sound coming from the speakers on intense audio passages, even at low volume. This does not happen with regular music -cd- listenning. Any input shall be appreciated.
On your home theater receiver, set the front speaker type to "small". That will limit the bass to the speakers, and the low-frequency overload, which is the cracking noise you describe, will be gone.
Thanks. Well, the ESL's are not running full range. I use n 80 hz. high pas filter in my preamp. though I also use Vandersteen subwoofer. I will try that however and report.
Do you know what rate of attenuation the high pass is?
80hz at 6 db might not be enough and your idea of low volume might still be too high.
I have Quads also ,but I would never use them for HT use. Dynamic range is not their forte..,
The size of the room also plays a part in perceived loudness .
25 watts for example, in a small room can sound and feel enough ,but the same input in a large room would have you turning up the volume to compensate and overload the speakers. ( just an illustration )
