I'm considering getting a Quad 606 (second version). Currently using a 405 (first version) which I love... I wonder how much improvement I am going to hear with the 606 (if at all)...

The only to know for sure is to listen in the same system.
I'd love to say no difference as both can be said to be designed to the original Quad saying of "a piece of wire with gain", however that can't possible be true as the original 405's used the LM301A opamp as an input stage. The 606 is all discrete and of simpler design with 3 pairs of output devices per channel.
So there will be very audible differences... but which you prefer... is up to you.

I'd generally say unless you go from a mismatch to a good match,
amplifier "upgrades" are a big disappointment, unless their really
is a very large gulf in the two amplifiers performance and price.

I used to have a Quad 405 Mk1 that was upgraded to a 405 Mk2 with a Quad 44 pre-amp.
I could not pick up a major difference between the two Quad versions but when I hooked up a loan Krell KSA 100 mk 1 to the 44 there was a day and night difference. Regardless how loyal I was to the Quad brand - the hard reality was a speedy divorce with the Quad equipment.

I've listened to most Quads at home but not all with identical equipment. Mooly's comment on the LM301 IC in the 405/1 is relevant because it is noisy in comparison to later 405/2, 606 and 306 (similar discrete designs) - See Keith Snook's site for sensible technical comments and solutions to Quad 405 issues.
