Splitting the band reduces IMD. I don’t follow why that affects Sd? except that use of very large Sd forces us to use many drivers with cross overs?
my discussion above was for the Sd scaling. Band splitting ads on top. But again, making up for eg 30dB means a huge multi-way speaker which is not exactly simpler? Good for oligarch hifi of course 😀
How exactly is a 2-way monitor >120Hz + added subwoofers more complicated?

In fact, it makes the design significantly more simple, because we don't have to go through hoops to get low-end + mid-frequency out of one single cabinet.
With all the acoustic nightmare involved with that.

Besides, it still won't help us with room modes either!!

The only downside for more Sd is just space, size and volume.
All other things will (and must) be better.

I understand that not everyone has space for that.
But that is not relevant in a discussion about best performance.

Also that assumes a very black-and-white choices.
In reality there are many solutions possible.
With a bit of creativity even more, camouflaging a subwoofer isn't particularity hard thing to do.

Btw, even when using the exact same drivers, IMD will still always be better with less excursion.
So splitting things up is always beneficial in sense of absolute best performance possible.

Or just getting a driver with lower excursion related IMD specs to get similar results.

Any deviation from this is due to nonlinearities. All the things you mention affect the frequency response. so theory works.
That word starting with Non. It speaks much more loudly to a driver designer than anyone else. It is why we model them with sophisticated programs that use filter theory and the modeling is not what we measure many times. Those non-linearities are what I was referring to in the first place.

Filter theory keeps getting a little more refined. It is much more possible now to calculate out what a driver may do. But as Lars knows it is always a best guess. It is not exact.

In general terms filter theory is an attempt at explaining the effects that we see in the real world drivers. That has never been a perfect explanation up until now.
