Gary's system was a big success! Everything worked as was expected (Gary actually did bring back-up gear just in case!) I certainly spent a fair amount of time listening to his system! A very nice system.

My goodness that is impressive. Nice action shot of the listeners too. I don't see Capt. X though.

Hi All,
will there be any photos posted of the event? i noticed several people taking pictures and forgot to bring my camera... hopefully we can see some pics.
Cheers!
Scott
Hi Scott,
I've got some pic's that I'll try to post later this week. While I was gone having fun there on Saturday, the wind blew 4 trees down at home. 🙁 One broke power lines and blocked the driveway, and 3 others broke fences. My stepson and I cleaned up most of the mess yesterday, but I have fences to mend this week. Still no power or internet at home, but the good thing is no humans or animals, or buildings were damaged.
I'll get some pic's posted when we have power back up, and I get caught up with "home"work.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the visit.

Gary,
We all have many moons to travel to reach that level. (most of us won't get there) Glad we all had a chance to enjoy it.
Thanks for sharing, and kudos to your wife for allowing you the the luxury of putting that system together. 😉
Gary -for us not privileged to attend, care to share details - including the amps? - two of every type!
Yah, a little paper 3" full range will make for a decent enough computer monitor, or bedroom TV rig, but this is serious stuff kiddies

Capt. "X" was so overcome with emotion while listening to Gary's system that he started singing along with the music. All those happy listeners in the picture? Well, the truth is that they ganged up and threw the good Captain out of the room!
The Captain was overheard casting a very dark Curse upon them: "May all of your final years be spent listening to a Bose Radio!"

not something I'd wish on my worst enemy
... well actually, that's probably not true

Chris,
I'm sure that you're right!

Two of every type? I guess now the Noah's Ark mural in the background makes more sense!
The source was a server running JRiver MC20 on Windows, connected via USB to an exaSound e20 mk ii DAC, with balanced connections to the amps. The amps are Lynn Olson's "Amity" circuit: Tribute input transformer, push-pull 5687 driver stage, O/Netics interstage, push-pull 300B's, O/Netics output transformer.
As for the speakers, each channel uses the following:
Deep Bass
Acoustic Elegance TD15H woofer and two PR15 passive radiators in 5 cf enclosure, powered by plate amp, low pass at about 60 Hz.
Midbass
GPA 416-8B Classic Series (alnico) in 3 cf sealed enclosure, -3 dB at about 60 Hz, passive 2nd order low pass at about 800 Hz.
Midhorn
Azurahorn AH-425 horn, Radian 750NeoBe driver. Passive 3rd order high pass at about 800 Hz, autoformer attenuator by Dave Slagle, equalization results in flat response to 13 kHz.
Ribbon
RAAL 210-10 Lazy Ribbon, passive 2nd order at 13 kHz.
Gary Dahl
yup kiddies - that's not yer granpop's hi-fi
Funny thing is that just yesterday my wife commented that now that she's retired, we need to make a life-wish list / dream-board, rather like our daughter and SIL in Bermuda did a few years back. As we speak, they're hiking around the Austrian alps or some such place - for the second time in about 5 yrs.
Experiencing a system like this one would be on my short list, but we'd have to find something for Sue to do that weekend - maybe a Yin Yoga in the park class and 20 mile bike tour of the local countryside. 😀

Gary's system was the most sublime and well integrated sound i've ever heard. it was just so effortless and all the other positive adjectivations you can throw at them 🙂
the entire meet was really impressive.
cheers,
Scott

imagine if he'd had time to optimize the room
Hi Chris,
In years past we've used that room for our speaker contest and have always used acoustic damping to control standing waves and even out the sound. I talked to Gary and we both agreed that the room needed some treatment.
Best Regards,
Terry
It's been a busy week after the winds and power outage last weekend. Got the last section of fence patched up this morning -- good to be done with that -- whew!!
As promised, here are some pic's of the event last Saturday. Really amazed at all the great stuff (and great folks) that showed up!
Some large speakers -
1. Sir Byrd's large 2-ways and Howard's curvy 3-ways with PR
2. Rene's TWW towers, Sir Byrd's, Howards, and Jay's MTM prototypes on top
3. Howard contemplating his next move, after setting up last year's winning top 3-ways.
4. A re-creation of a MurphyBlaster design using Usher and Scan Speak drivers. (set up inverted to position the tweeter near ear-level)
All good sounding.
