Hi,
I realise that there are hundreds of forums and sites regarding this topic. I have read a great deal of them before posting this topic.
I would just like to get a 2nd opinion from a few people before I go out and order the bits Ive chosen from particular sites etc....
Here is a list of what I belive I will need:
- PSOne LCD (Check)
- Condenser Fresnel
- Field Fresnel
- Projection Lens
- Lamp
Over the course of the last week I have been reading other topics and I have seen that using a condenser fresnel with a focal length of ~220mm and a field fresnel with focal length of 330mm is a good combo when using a projection lens with focal length of 290mm.
Now one thing I am not sure on is the difference between the condenser and field fresnel in terms of there physical properties. Are they the same thing only named differently due to there position within the projector?
Now the main reason for this thread. Here are links to the specific bits I am thinking of buying. I woudl like to know if these are a good selection and if I have chosen the best place to buy them (ie: price wise).
Condenser Fresnel (220mm fl):

Field Fresnel (330mm fl):
http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/l3606.html
Projection Lens:
Possibly one of these?
TOMINON 9" (230mm) FL F/4.5 COPY LENS
http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/l3384a.html
SOMCO MULT-ELEMENT LENS ASSEMBLY 240MM FL
http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/l3804.html
Lamp:
Here is where I really am stuck. Do I buy an old OHP from ebay and use the lamp within it or can anyone suggest a site or specific product to buy? Also what are the specs for the kind of lamp I will be needing.
I forgot to add that I am wanting a throw distance of 2-3 metres with an projection image of about 50-60 inches.
I hope that someone will help me out with is as Optics is not my area of knowledge but with some help from you guys hopefully I can get this projector up and running (and under budget).
Thanks to anyone that can give there time to this post.
🙂

If you can find a cheap Over head projector - use it, saves a
lot of time, I like the ones with the triplet lens
they look like this
there real easy to mount
and shower drains like this, can make it easy to mount
the triplet lens
I think a lot here also post at Lumenlab.com
you might also ask there for help , the forums will be
down for the week end, there moving servers
Over here in the USA they got a ENH Lamp in some
Over head projectors that runs 175 hours - when most
only run 25-30 hours, but its 120v 250w, not sure what
you would use over there
Here is pictures from the original "Mini z"
Mini Z-Factor Projector
and the plans for it - in PDF - Little over 6mb
"Mini Z-Factor Projector Plans"
and you can see mine here
My Mini-z, That I Got From J3yq, Who Got It From Tescorp, Etc Etc
because the forums are down this week end - you can try
the Google Cached version

There are all kinds of ways to make a Psone projector, this is just
one that looks good, and is simple - Good Luck

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

len choice?
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. The pdf will be lots of use!
If I were to buy the parts indivudually then which lens from Surplus Shed would be good.....are the 2 lens' I chose a good option. I'm thinking the TOMINON 9"FL would be a good choice.
What was the lumen rating on your lamp/bulb you used on your PSone PJ?
Thanks again....

they got a Focal length Calculator over at Lumenlab in the forums
that works well - try that first, might save you some time
Focal Calculator II, rev1.43
the ENH lamp has 15000 Lumens

Thanks a lot for this help.
As you can probably tell this is my first PJ so I'm not sure how much planning is needed before buying the different parts.
I think I have most parts figured, just need to make sure before buying them.
Could you please tell me the difference between a front surface mirror and back surface mirror? I know that a front surface mirror is far superior in reflective terms than an average mirror.
Btw when I start construcing the PJ I will upload pics so that this may be a litle more interesting for you....
Thanks a lot....

back surface mirror - light goes threw the glass and hits the reflective surface, and then goes back threw the glass - like a regular mirror
and you lose some light going threw the glass, and you can
get some optical distortions - but have not seen them my self
front surface mirror - the reflective surface is on top of the glass

Hi,
Ive been looking around trying to find a lamp which would be suitable.
Ive found a great store online:
http://www.theelectronicsshop.co.uk
Ive found these from the following link:
http://www.theelectronicsshop.co.uk/Products/Lamps-A1.htm
A1/223 Projector Lamp
A1/239 Projector Lamp
A1/262 Projector Lamp
or this one:
http://www.theelectronicsshop.co.uk/Products/Lamps-M.htm
M33 Halogen Lamp
Are any of these suitable? If so which would you pick out of them? Or are there others on the website which would do a better job.
In terms of the front and back surface mirror, is there any reason why for the 2 mirror design as in the pdf you sent you couldn't use 2 front surface mirrors instead of 1 front and 1 back surface mirror?
The calculator is very useful. I managed to work out what FL I need for the projection lens with the throw distance and projection size I want.
Would 2 page magnifiers with magnification x3 work as the fresnels in a non-split design.
Sorry for all the questions.

My mini Z has 2 front surface mirrors, you can use what you want
I have never had much luck with page magnifiers, could not
get them to work, Thats why I stick to Overhead Projector
parts, I can get them local real cheap
But I know that there are projectors that have used them, might
want to search around for that info, and what type they used
what ever lamp you get, try to get one thats about 10,000 to
15,000 Lumen's and around 4200k color - brighter is always better
The lamp I use is around 3200k and its a little to "red / orange"
for my taste, some say 4200k is even to "red / orange" for them
and go up to a 5000k-7000k - and I have a projector that uses
a 10,000K it looks a little to blue for my tastes
Here is a Wikipedia page on Color temperature
but 3200k is about all you find in regular projector lamps like
you find in Overheard Projectors and such

Update
Hi,
I was going to buy several bits and pieces from Surplus Shed (I had them all picked out) until they sent me the email regarding shipping cost to the UK. It turns out it will cost triple the amount of the actual parts.
I decided to check out OHP's on ebay. Over the past weeks I kept seeing them go for over £30 and then delivery was at lest £20 or pick up only.
I eventually found one which seems pretty good. I got it for £4.99 (£20 p&p).
It is a LIESEGANG TRAINER DELUXE 400 OHP:
http://www.iscodisplay.com/overhead_projector.htm
It has pretty much all I need:
Lens
Fresnel
Bulb
Mirror
I also check and the bulbs for the projector can be found pretty much anywhere pretty cheaply.
The only concern I have is to ensure I have good airflow through the proector enclosure. I will be getting several fans to place through the enclosure once I have laid it all out.
