Dear all
I am still seeking for my new amp schematic.
Does anybody have a link or a jpg for a 6550 PSE (i.e. Audio Note kit two?)
Thanks in advance

Hi Jim,
thanks forthe link.
I already considered this schematic, I am not an expert in PSU design but I think that 470uF as first capacitor, even if there is a choke before it, will burn very soon the 5U4G...
What you think about?

It's not the size of the capacitor per se; it's the turn on surge associated with a capacitor that must be controlled when vacuum rectifiers are used. That choke protects the 5U4 very nicely.
Inductors are called chokes because they choke off ripple, surges, etc.

.. again, I am not a designer but, having a look on the 5U4 specs, there are several rating charts referred to the capacitor input.
typical operation say
Filter input capacitor 40 uF...
I think that at the time of this tube 40uF was really a high value, 470uF was not yet even in the dreams of designers...
I still remain in my opinion that 470 Uf may shorten a lot the life of the 5U4
🙂

Hi,
Only this is not typical operation, the cap is situated behind the choke, moreover this is also a hybrid rectifier.
If it were to be put in a "typical" CLC circuit the rectifier tube wouldn't last five minutes....
Cheers,😉

That filter is choke input, not cap. I/P. Once an inductor is placed in the B+ line, the value of following filter caps. is not limited. The choke protects the rectifier from damaging surges.
