Is this a good approach to power a 24v preamp board? I include the schematic of the preamp also. I'd use a hefty transformer to feed the regulator board.
Why a hefty transformer? That preamp only uses a few mA per channel. I'd consider using a wall-wart to keep any hum fields far away since it needs so little power. The regulator is fine BTW.

"Hefty" transformers (18V/4a) relative to what the vendor recommends for it (18V/500ma) is all I have, so hefty it is going to have to be unless I find something closer. Would a computer psu have something I could use?

It was more from the standpoint of why buy a big transformer when it isn't needed. If you already have it, you may as well use it as it certainly will cause no harm. It really only needs <50 mA.
