Many Thx...I am going to breadboard this and give it a try...The one I ended up using works perfectly (schem.previously posted) for security...It is either Off or On...No graduation.
All the ones I tried using CMOS chips constantly needed tuning...CONSTANTLY!
From what I have seen on the podcasts...this circuit seems pretty sweet!

You can get an analog voltage output proportional to distance from the Sharp GP2D12 IR range finder. Detection range is 10-80 cm. It costs about $15. You need an IR reflective target.
