Proposed new forum structure for Loudspeakers

A dissenting opinion (longish)

I think that splitting the forum would be a mistake.

It takes a certain level of traffic to keep a forum alive. The level right now seems just about right. It is not overwhelming. In fact, we rarely spill past the first page on any given day. Conversely, there is almost always something new and interesting to read.

Splitting along the lines proposed run the risk that any one forum will be "undercapitalized", and the participants will gradually lose interest. If (say) the "three way ribbon speaker" forum only received a post a day, how often would people continue to check it for updates?

Conversely, there are real benefits to keeping all the traffic on one forum. Even though (for example) I do not have a desire to build a full range mini-line array, I enjoy reading 7V's thoughts [*] on this topic as well as others.

I just wonder what we're really trying to accomplish here?

* Is the current situation so overwhelming that it is driving people away?

* Do we benefit from encouraging the experts to hang out only in selected subforums? Or do we contemplate that they will read and contribute to all forums? No one wants the former, and if the latter is our goal, how have we made it easier for them to contribute by asking them to check more than one board?

I'm a total "newbie" (check out the user name if you doubt me), and I have all of about 4 posts to my credit ... so feel free to take this with a big old grain of salt. Just the opinion of someone who reads the forum everyday, and has benefitted greatly from its current organization.

[* Didn't mean to single you out Mr. 7V ... just a convenient example.]

The only problem I can see with subdividing the group on category lines is the amount of crossover projects, such as horn mid/highs with open baffle subs, or TL bass with ESLs, etc, etc...🙂
Sorry pinkmouse, here on the mini line-array forum we don't do crossovers - tried them, didn't like them.
My suggestions would be two groups- "Merely Foolish" and Totally Insane"
Oh come on, who's going to admit to being only "merely foolish".
How about:
"Totally insane - committed" and "Totally insane - still at large"?

<insert subject here>

I think it should at least be split into hifi stereo / home theatre / subwoofers. while there is a little bit of crossover between the three i don't personally care about car (or most home) subwoofers or home theatre all that much. i would just hang around the hifi parts and then occassionally peruse the rest.
so my vote would be:

2-channel hifi
home theatre
subwoofers

Well, I think the loudspeaker forum needs splitting because topics slide off the first page too fast -

But we don't want to split it too much, or they won't move fast enough -

I vote for loudspeakers, subwoofers, and crossovers -

I think that adding a crossover category would benefit DIYAUDIO by distinguishing it from other web forums. At the moment I can't think of another web forum that has crossover as a specialty forum.

Crossovers are an art unto themselves, and quite difficult for those lacking knowledge in that area. If over a period of time DIYAUDIO came to be the place to go for those interested in help or improving their knowledge of crossovers, that would spill over to increased traffic in many other areas and further establish the presence of DIYAUDIO as a neat place to go on the web.

There should atleast be a "show off your speakers" thread.. for people to post pictures of their finished creations

I did it a week ago, nobody replied, should I start a new one ? It would be such a good idea just to have a big scrapbook of what we did. could be a permanent thread. Im all for it:nod:

Splitting the forum...

copy/paste the idea that is used by audioasylum.com

then you can recruit those minions to come here
because the interface is the same /haha

I personally would love a version of the high efficiency forum on Audio Asylum but with the moderators of DIY Audio. From what I can see here the moderators seem to know something about the topic and actually read what is posted to the forum.

so catagorisation of the forum could still take place without splitting the forum up, just change the searching system a bit and add tick boxes of the posting of a new thread as to what categories it applies to; might suck a bit to have to go through all the old ones though and assign them category variables 🙁

Yeah, it needs to be a seperate section, not just a single post which people post in.... people should use a standard format for their posts, so all the titles have the same format, and everyone gives the same info about their enclosures....

I like the way it is. If anything, no more than maybe separating subs into it's own. I can't stand forums that you have to drill down into endless specialty sections to find a good read.

Either that or my vote goes for the Hybrid Mini Line Array Forum! 🙂

i vote for

dont split too much, just into 1 or 2 more forums to seperate things.

only go high efficiency/horn forum if wel have enough traffic, audio asylums high eff forum has gone crap moderated angry<imao>,

i personaly think there wouldnt be enough in our own high eff.

i post at the 'loudspeaker discussion area' although it has low traffic- it has a few knowledgable fellows there who help with horn design.

loudspeakers, subwoofers

Thanks Pete, I'll take your vote.

Seriously, I can see some advantages in having a separate forum for subwoofers and room-bass-speaker interaction in general.

I can also see some benefit in having a "show off your speakers" thread, although I wonder whether peoples' speakers would receive such a good airing in a separate forum. People do like some acknowledgement and a pat on the back when they've completed a speaker design, particularly if it's their first.

I'm not sure what purpose would be served by having a separate section for crossovers. It's such an integral part of the design (well, most designs) and often incorporates baffle compensation which can tie it in, not only with the drive units but also the cabinet. Personally, I'd rather see the crossover included in the thread with the matching speaker.

On balance, why don't we start by separating the subs and see where that takes us?

PS: Popular this thread isn't it?
