Proper way to get mono?

The problem with simply hooking left and right together is this, the left channel is left plus mono and the right channel is right plus mono. Adding these directly gives left+mono+mono+right so there are two monos and a left and a right. The result of this is not really what is wanted because if the L and R have any time difference of a particular signal there will be a lot of loss in higher frequencies. The attached file is the way I like to make mono but it is a little over the top for most people. This is made with two all pass filter strings and sounds really good.
