bitbyter said:Hey Akeem, I'm curious why you don't use a condensor lens after your light source and before your fresnel lens? Don't you get serious hotspotting without one?
I tried using a condenser (magnifying glasses) in the earlier test setups but never got a good result with them, probably didn't try hard enough.
Since the Image quality was quite acceptable without a condenser (picture is a little bit brighter in the middle, but your eyes immediatly adapt to that, unlike cheap digi-cams) I never used them again.
not using one also keeps size down and the setup simple.
The real reason I dont use a condensor is because I'm lazy.
hehe, but can it improve the picture or will it improve the light beam ?
If so I will test with some condenser lenses, if it worth the trouble though cause they aren't cheap !

Cheap? Go to the surpluss shead webstie, you can usually get a good condensor lens for about $10.00.
in Canada maybe, but here I payd for a 9cm 20€ and I should buy a bigger one or my case has to enlarge allot.
But gonna test with it maybe it cost me like 40€ extra but if it's improve the screen I will be happy !

Bulb Price
Akeem, how much did you pay for that Bulb? The only one I could find with a similar formfactor is the Sylvania HQISE400DX which I got priced at $189.39 Canadian. Man that's an expensive bulb, anyhow here's hoping you got a better deal...😉

Lamp = 400W MH OSRAM: HQIT400N
I paid about €65 for one, dropped it, bought another, again €65.
The guy in the lamp-store gave me some good advice: "Don't drop the lamp."

Little question.
I have this lightbulb:http://www.lighting.philips.com.cn/apr/-/Portal?xml=catalogue/lamps_product_p&content_id=145991
And this ballast http://members.lycos.co.uk/lanpartydotbe/Untitled-1.jpg
And I have 3 capacitors from 20µf x2 and 1x 4.5µf
Now these are 3 not small things, aren't there any other and is it really needed to have 45µf for that lightbulb ?
Is there any information on the net or anybody with the experience that can point me if a 30µf Capacitor is enough or can I use a 50µf I know those are in metal but I only need to use one then instead of 3 large things ?

@Tekker, sorry I have no idea what you are talking about, I just asked the guy in the lamp-store which starter I had to use, he gave me the right one and I didn't have to worry about uF's.
I'm telling you, that lamp-store guy is full of wisdom !!
I have added the last pictures from my PJ here

hey akeem,
GREAT pj and progress, the best so far 🙂
do you have a screen?
and do you experience any image problems? such as low contrast etc.

screen : wooden frame with a white table-cover stretched over it, sometimes you can see a square-motif on it, but nothing too annoying. 2m diagonal (4:3)
no image problems, contrast is fine

Just wondering, have you considered a shroud of some sort ranging from the front of thr projector housing out to the lens holder to reduce ambient light leaking into the room.
All i can say is...Wow. Very original, and very creative.
How'd you determine the lengths between the light source, fresnal.....ur glass pieces....& the lcd??
Guess & check?
Mad props

I just used trial and error for the distances, Ididn't even measure them in the OHP. After all there are only 2 or 3 distances to play with:
Lamp-Fresnel (close enough to reduce light-loss and far enough get converging rays after fresnel)
Fresnel-Projection Lens
not a fixed distance in this design
I made my fresnel a bit bigger than my LCD (about 1" on every side, had some room left in the box). Placed the LCD as far away from the fresnel as possible without losing brightness at the borders of the LCD.
It doesn't
realy matter where you place the heat-shield glasses between the optics, their primary function is to reduce convection heat; radiation heat released @ the LCD can be disposed of by a (very) small fan.

So are you using just ordinary glass pieces, & fans to keep that thing cool? Or are the glass pieces heat-eater-uppers?
Also...is that fresnal you're using straight off the broken projector you tore apart 4 this?
-quick n00b Q
If i bought some 400w MH bulb (let's say GE 4 example) off ebay, and polished up a bowl for a reflector as you have akeem.....same results? Or would the bulb, not being from a projector make a difference?
