Projector kit off eBay - did i get ripped off

all that normally comes with these kits is a fresnell lens (available elsewhere for around $1) and some instructions (which are freely available on the net you just have to search for it).

Bottom line I would not have paid that for it however if there was a survey out there I would generally guess that at least half of those on this board got their start trying out one of those "kits" and came this way looking for something better.

That said there is a msn group that deals with these and it stays pretty active. Several there have come away with "good" results. Still though its nowhere near as good as a diy lcd projector.

Im one of those "Active" members there... and.. belive me several projectors there can beat a vga panel or ps1 style projector! Especially in contrast, its truly amazing, atleast like 3000:1!🙂

The brightness can be lacking somewhat, but there was one person that acheived truly outstanding brightness results at 84 inches diagonal on a about 1.0 - 1.3 gain screen!

I really think that alot of people here consider a diy crt projector total crap, but if you use the right parts (NO NOT A FRESNEL!), you can have a damn good projector!:smash:

Hey ancorp

I wasnt trying to "dis" ya or make light of the work done over there. However I am about 102% positive that the ebay seller he is going with is not going to send a minescious lens (sorry about spelling) or a triplet lens for him to make his projector with. I used to be an active member (was partyharty there also) but I feel that it is more likely for someone to get decent results going the lcd route.

You are right there are some that are doing great and I dont believe it is all total crap. However most that buy the "get a 100 " tv kits are very disappointed. Heck I did it years ago with an old black and white tv. It also kinda sucks that you have to use a mirror or cut some wires to the main yoke in the television.

Yea I kno, just wanted for the people here to know that its far from the 150" tv ebay scam!

I started out with a 5" black n white tv and a 2 inch greenish dcx lens inserted into a macdonalds drink cup (i personnaly dont like that restaurant anymore...) and I got TERRIBLE results, but I saw some potential in the idea and went onto using a 17" flat screen monitor and a fresnel, than a 140mm diameter pcx lens (not to bad of results, dim though, and required a very curved projection screen), and then went onto 13/14" color tv sets and triplets...

I totally respect all the work and progress that has been done of DIY CRT and LCD projectors, good job people!!!😀

I too em building a lcd projector just for the fun of it from a 2.5 or 2.6" lcd (not sure, lol, havent measured it!), 500w halogen, and a delta 4 CRT projection triplet lens (too big, but very sharp and light efficient without a front fresnel!) The quality will be crap, im just doing it for fun (I will still use it though)

For now Im sticking with CRT projection, but may move onto LCD once I get the funds to afford an MH and a decent lcd/fresnels (got a 135mm diameter triplet as a spare already!)

I tried a long time ago, 9 inch tv and grandmaws page reader
got a dim nasty image gave up - I got the plans free
from a guy that got ripped off and made a web site about
it

I got a bunch of CRT computer monitors 14 inch - would
a meniscus lens from a OHP work - in place of the fresnell
lens - I would only go up to 5 foot square any way at most

I would like to try just for fun

found this place with free plans

Long time lurker, first time posting, Hi folks

$8 isn't a lot to pay to learn something entirely new...I was one of those people that bought this kit and wound up here. I've learned more here than some $500 college classes

Now working with 3 seperate panel projects (one for art displays, tv/PC aren't the only applications!) and planning to fire up the welder to kit a projector for a carputer. All of your info is uber-helpful, kudos

Got bored and made one out of wood - wood
box and focus like the mark 3 - I cant say that I
Would watch that - it was way to dim - I was better
off with a flood light and cheap lcd -

I used the meniscus lens from a OHP - bad -
I used the fresnell from it - split - it did better
but its way to dark - I ether am doing some thing
wrong - or have bad eye sight

It just plain looks bad - I would like to
see one that worked -

Am I using the wrong lens???

Sorry if this is a little thread jacking - but
I to want to know how to make it work

Here is a pic of what I made, it took about 6 hours
- I tried the focus inside and out of the box
- I just put the fresnell center-erd over the hole
when I used it - I was not using both, just one at a time

Ancorp not trying to knock you here but it helps if you can see the image. Ive done about 5 years of fooling around with crt's and there is no way its gonna be bright enough to watch in any decentcy, lol come on now🙂

With projectors a day scene is meant to look like a day scene, the objective here is to have the image as real as possible, how can we have an image as real as possible if we dont have the brightness to back it up? Fair enough about contrast but that contrast is no good if you can bearly see it.

Crt pro projectors are another story im talking about the tv enlarging here. There is also no way that a triplet is going to be brighter then a singlet lens of the same size or focal, a triplet lens will always chew more light then a singlet lens, it comes down to reflection, no matter the specs. You cant cheat science, ive tried, and lost everytime. There is no way a tv is ever going to be bright enough for a decent projection.

Trev🙂

the pdf from there web page talked about
"Bright Silver gift wrapping paper" and
"white tulle is a net like material that's usually
found on Bridal dresses"

they put white tulle over the wrapping paper
and then a Matte Acrylic sheet on top of that

and a another one is

silver mirror Acrylic sheet and
frosted matte Acrylic sheet on top

that is a bright screen - I was using a
window shade - might be a good screen
for using a flood light or low light OHP
- HQI would blind you, and it might make
the tv projector work - might

But I do need a better screen

but still - never have I ever herd about that untill now
and most pics show on a flat white wall

Trev,

I agree that a triplet is dimmer when it has the same specs, light has to pass through 3 lenses instead of 1!🙂 I dont recall saying anything about that though...

I consider some well build DIY CRT projectors quite bright-
heres one for example - built from an Advent 14" flat screen TV, a about 1.3 gain painted white screen, i think one or 2 VGE units, and a 150-172mm (not sure anymore) Beta2 /Polivision4 triplet lens. The screen size is 84 inches. Creator - "Kaosradio"

Right Here

To me - the brightness is great. Guess we just have different standards of "Good brightness") Beta2 /Polivision4 triplet lens. The screen size is 84 inches.

Will,
That screen does exist, with abouta 9.0 gain. I am hoping to build one like that someday, but it will set me back atleast $150-200.

i think one or 2 VGE units
are you talking about this - VGE - Video Game Enhancer
http://www.nuwaveinc.com/vge.asp

A box that brightins the video

I think I can do that with the Nvidia drivers on the computer

and adjusting the brightness control pot on the back of the tv
or monitor, sometimes on the inside - I hate working on
TV and Monitors - got knocked across the room once:bigeyes:

I guess I would need that Opaque Projector lens thing
another thing I have never herd of when doing this
🙄

I will try the brightness control pot on the back of the
monitor first -I hope I dont get fried :hot:

that Beta ll Lens is huge

I thought that if you turned up the brightness control pot
that the image would get to washed out - I guess thats
why there using the VGEs
