if i bought an used projector off ebay, when the lamp goes-is it just the bulb or the whole lamp?
if it is just the bulb is it possible to replace with a cheaper metal halide bulb, surely if you search the part number on the internet you could get an almost identical one far cheaper, is this possible?
cause £200-350 for a bulb is a joke metal halide or not.
surely you could fit an alternative for cheaper.

when the lamp burns you usually have to replace the whole assembly. i've seen replacement lamps on ebay for epsons, sharp, sony, panasonic, nec, sanyo.... all for half the price as new or cheaper
search on ebay.com, ubid.com, yahoo.auctions.com and any other auction site for a replacement lamp. most definately you can find a replacement if you're patient. like i said before, i found a replacement lamp for my projector for $50.00 when they retail for almost $400.00 US. so do some searching. eventually you will find one.

replacement lamp
Apotheosis,
So how do you find out which lamp is compatible to the one you want to replace? Is there a site I can go ? My Panasonic manual does not say much but just metal halide 260w.

as long its the same kind of rating, same wattage and voltage, and type, you "should" be able to use it for your projector. i used a elplp10 when i really needed a elplp06 which is much bigger and it worked fine.
just make sure the lamps look similar. you dont want to burn out your power supply.
a popular site is www.projectorcentral.com search for your pj and it'll give you specs. or you can contact the manufacturer and ask.

Kcc go to panasonic website or any bulb supplier and look for a bulb for your model projector then they should give u the parts number then u can go search on ebay and so on....
I've researched the hell out of this before I decided to go the DIY route. Usually with an LCD projector, when the bulb burns out, you have to replace the whold lamp assembly (cage the lamp and reflector are mounted in) Depending on what model and brand projector you have, prices range from $350-$700US for a replacement. HOWEVER, I did find a guy who "refurbishes" lamp assemblies. He can't refurb all assemblies, it depends on the style of the lamp. If you have a projector which has a lamp assembly that can be refurbed, He can do it for $175-$275US.

I think I start to understand that those selling for thirty, fourty or fifty dollars replacement bulbs are for over head projectors. And lamps for lcd projector from brand name manufacturer such as Infocus, panasonic ,NEC etc. are two hundred dollars and up even in eBay. Am I right? So the best possible way to go is to have the old one remanufactured. And that there are no manufacturers such as Sylvania,Osram currently producing replacement lamp(including lamp structure)for lcd projectors.
i bought my epson lamp new for $50.00. i also bought a new sharp lamp from ebay for my sharp projector for $45.00. so its very possible to get a great deal, you just have to look and be patient.
lamps sell for very little unless its for a popular model which will cause it to sell for 100 - 175. but still a good buy compared to full retail price.
the replacement lamps for ohp sell for $5.00 to $30.00, that i've seen.
