I've assembled MH 400W in a wooden box, added cooling fan and now get to the fun part. Although I read almost everything I still feel uncomfortable trying to get a correct projection.
A few observations from the beginner (for beginners and maybe beyond):
- the center of the light source, fresnel, LCD and projection lens MUST be all in line
- distance from the light source to the fresnel should be about focal length of the fresnel (not sure about this one)
- don't try to use fresnel made from page magnifiers (poor quality)
- projection lens is in general a magnifying glass and unless you want to get a picture 3 by 5 yards from the distance of 6 feet it should have magnification ratio about 1.2 - 1.5
- you cannot really choose where to put projection lens at - the right point is a function of distance from the screen, the picture is sharp only at one point
- beware of material you are making the whole box from, after using wood from an old desk mine is damn heavy - would not get a mobility certification for sure
No results yet, since no "real" projection.
Anyone has a "real" fresnel to sell?
My cooler is also a little bit loud. I used an 18W, 120V I bought somewhere. I suspect it's too powerful and something smaller should work fine with MH 400W, but I'm not sure though - it's still quite warm inside.

Hello gregory, I have a 12" fresnel I bought from diylabs.org, I will sell it to you for $20 or so. I have never used it, its brand new and still in the box. The fresnel has a 14" focal lenght though, so would need to add on to your box. I would also suggest getting a triplet for an objective lens. I live just north of Seattle so shipping would be cheap for the fresnel.
