Hi,

First of all I would like to greet everybody sharing this hobby 🙂

I have so far completed 2 speaker projects:
- an introductory 2-way based on cheap Polish drivers, which turned out very nice and I am still using it on my desk with the computer
- ported 2-way based on Vifa drivers with pretty standard x-over. This also has given pretty good results.

Right now I am completing a more serious measurment tools (Based on Audua SW), and I am planning a new design.

I would appreciate any comments and suggestions.

It is going to be a sealed 2-way + powered sub (acting as a base for the 2-way?).

It is going to be powered by a tube pre-amplifier and a solid state power-amp, possibly replaced with bi-amping later. The ultimate goal would be something like tube pre-amp+pass aleph+subwoofer amp.

I have brought 2 NHT1259 drivers from the US, so these are going to be the (sub)bass drivers. Also the project of the enclosure for the NHT 1259 is pretty standard - sealed enclosure of about 90 ltrs. It is going to be crossed in the region of 100-200 Hz, depending on the mid-bass unit.

For the mid-bass I have initially chosen the Focal 4v3211, which I have spotted for Euro 25 each. I was thinking of 2 of those per channel. My decision is not final, I would appreciate any suggestions - let's say ut to $200 per pair. I have seen more exotic and more expensive drivers like Jordan JX92S, or Bandor 50AFSW/8, but they are hardly available for me and they don't really fit in my budget. The Focals seem and good value...

I am still thinking about the tweeter. So far I have considered:
- 19mm dome tweeters: Hiquphon OW2, ScanSpeak D2010/8511,
- more expensive - ribbons - Raven R1, or similar.

I like the idea of not having to attenuate the tweeter.

Honestly, $250 per pair of tweeters is the limit (a used ribbon might fit). Plese advice on the tweeter choice.

Regarding construction - I am considering stone as the material of the subbass unit, being the stand for the mid-high.

For the mid-high unit I was thinking of a heavily damped MDF.

I want to keep the front wall as narrow as possible and to keep the mid-high drivers as close as possible.

After completing the enclosures I want to do the measurments and design the crossover.

My priorities are:
- imaging,
- dynamics,
- enough sensitivity to drive from class A poweramp, or tube poweramp.

I would appreciate any comments or advice and I will report on the progress of the design,

Michal

$250/pr tweeters fora $50 per pair mid. relax guy you can make do with less.

i would suggest to look ath focal 120ti (grey) tweeter. it needs a L pad as ost tweeter will to mate to the mid you have chosen.

also the vifa XT ring radiator or the SS 2904/70000 if budget permits

Well,

$250 is a maximum imaginable limit for a great value buy or if someone convinces me to do so... Fr example if I would decide to go for a ribbon... Otherwise I would spend a lot less.

The new ScanSpeaks are way beyond that anyway... ;-)

The mids I have found seem to be a great buy, I was looking for alternatives, the next stop would be PHLs or the new ScanSpeak , but this would exceed my budget.

Am I wrong about it? Is there anything wrong with them? Should I buy them?

The tweeters that you are proposing are all 25mm. Why?

With this mid it is possible to use 19mm tweeter which theoretically would have a better dispersion and detail.

On the other hand with a bigger tweeter it might be possible to think of a 1st order x-over. Is this the reason?

The only Focal 120 something tweeter I can get is the 120 TD5 for $140 ;-( I can though try to ask some of my friends to get them from the US fo around $80.

What about the 19mm Hiquphon and ScanSpeak units (prices around $80 as well) - what are their disadvantages?

And I am still curious if any of you did have and experiences with the Focal 4v3211?
