Hi
I really like this one:
http://www.lautsprechershop.de/hifi/bau_prod.htm
It's from Monacors "number one"
I was wondering what you people think of it, or maybe some has build it already?
greetings. marcel

Looks nice, but.....
Where are you going to get the drivers from? Are MONACOR drivers available in the US? There are several different companies making similiar designs. You probably have quite a number of choices to build something almost like them.

i'm from europe
well, i'm from europe, the netherlands.....
the only similair design i found was the visaton's vox 250
who has more ?

For Monacor home page, try http://www.monacor.de
Then click on "Contact" at top of the page. This will bring you to a page where they tell you to drop them an Email for a dealer near you.
Good luck!

Pipo:
Partly because the loudspeaker site is in German and partly because the Monacor website is confusing, I was unable to locate the specific drivers for this unit.
The measurements of the box, assuming 1" building material, yield an internal volume of 1.8 cu. ft. or so. The low frequency driver looks like a 12 inch from the picture. The frequency response is supposed to go down to 33 Hz.
There are some 12" woofers that will go down that far in a 1.8 cubic foot box, but many will not. If you either locate a link, or just list the Thiele Small parameters of your woofer, I can tell you how far down it really will go in your 1.8 cubic foot box. The specifications I need specifically are:
1)Qts,
2)Vas, (or equivalent volume)
3)Fs, (or free air resonance)
4)SPL. This last one is optional.
As far as general thoughts on the system, from the limited info I have available, I like the design approach. The d'Appolitto configuration, (Midbass-Tweeter-Midbass, or MTM) gives sharp imaging. The 43" height puts the tweeter right about ear level-34 inches or so. Instead of making a small MTM speaker, mounting on a stand, and crossing over to a subwoofer, this speaker encloses an MTM speaker within the volume of it's own 12" subwoofer.
Assuming the subwoofer crossover frequency is kept below 200 Hz or so, and everything else is done competently, it looks like a good choice.

Pipo:
I am assuming the 10 inch woofer has both it's 8 ohm voice coils in parallel to make a 4 Ohm speaker, and the ratings and specs are given for such an arrangement.
I have a slight discrepancy in box programs. The AVI program says the speaker will be 3 B down at 38 Hz, the BoxPlot shows it as being down 3 dB at 33 Hz. So I would conclude the ratings for bass extension, (33 Hz), are pretty much accurate. The Monacor woofer's excursion of plus or minus 4.5 mm hardly shows "long-throw" capability, however.
I see no reason that you cannot substitue Vifa drivers in your MTM. You might need to change the crossover, though. I will see how the mids stack up against Vifa mids in a later post.
One question. Is 33 Hz low enough for you? If it isn't then you will likely want to add a subwoofer. If that is the case, then building a floorstanding pair of speakers with their own 10" subwoofers is a little silly. You would be better off building 2 very small cabinets to house the MTM arrangements and building the sub right away.
Otherwise, when you build the sub, you will have the MTM's going down to perhaps 150 Hz, and the the new sub going up to perhaps 100 Hz. That means the Monacor 10" woofers will only have a passband of half an octave!!
In addition, you will have 3 big boxes in the listening area-the ProDomos and the sub. With a sub/satellite system, you will have one big enclosure-the sub-and two very small enclosures-the MTM's.
I am not trying to discourage you from building the ProDomos. 33 Hz is pretty deep. In addition, there are some 10" subwoofers, such as the Dayton Titanic and others, that will go deeper in the same size box, if you want to modify the ProDomos for deeper bass.
On a purely aesthetic note, judging by the picture on the website, I think the ProDomos are pretty sharp looking, actually.
